Can I use a shooting Chrony at an indoor range?

    Will the Chronometer work indoors?

Will the range let me use it?

Do I have to be any specified distance behind the chrony for it to work? Or can I have the muzzle within a foot of the thing?

I'd like to get one. Never used one before. I have a membership and go to my indoor range weekly... but go to the desert maybe once every 6 months.

I think there are two problems...
1)the chronographs don't like florescent lights
    2) indoor ranges don't have cease fires, a time the chrony could be set up in front of the firing line.

    So why not shoot outdoors?

I'm interested in this topic as well.

The two closest outdoor ranges are about an hour and twenty minutes away. Closest indoor range is 15 minutes away.

Yes, they can work very well at indoor ranges. You might have to tweek the lighting and/or shades a bit but, once you figure it out, it'll be good to go forever.

Really? I was under the impression that florescent light, being sort of non-directional made them unreliable. I thought you needed incandescent or sunlight to get accurate results.

The issue with fluorescent is they are "flickering" with the AC voltage cycle.
Incandescent are also cycling, but the filament can't cool off and reheat quickly enough to be picked up.

That's how we used to check the calibration of model airplane tachometers... and for the same reason, we couldn't "tach" and engine on the bench with direct fluorescent lighting.

Simply shading the aperture so there is no direct light hitting it should prevent problems.

the chrony will work indoors if the defusers are lit up with a constant light source (like incandescent bulbs). Not sure how reliable it will be, chorny's are sometimes picky at outdoor ranges. I can't even imagine what the 60Hz flickering of florescent bulbs in the background will do to your readings.

                      1) Yes, you can use your Chrony indoors.

                      2) Ask the folks at the range. You may be surprised that they halt the shooting for a few minutes to let you set-up your Chrony. Some may, some may not. Nothing lost in asking. (But try not to go during a busy time, like Fridays or Saturdays).

                      3) Yes, they have an accessory light that mounts onto the diffusers to allow indoor use. (CLICK HERE).
