    Case Prep

I've just been re-loading a lot of pistol. Now I want to start reloading for my 300 win mag and 223. The 223 is just going to be for tactical shooting, no more than 50-75 yds, the 300 win mag is going to be for long range up to 1000 yards. I got everything I need besides a way to prep the cases. I've been looking at
    1. Hornady Case Prep Center
    2. Dillon Trimmer
    3. Girard trimmer

Either way I have rcbs X-dies, which is supposed to make the brass not expand but I still need a trimmer, and you need to have an initial trim for the x-die. I have a five gallon bucket of 223, so hand trimming for that is out of the question.

I am open to your ideas and suggestions, I want to do what's makes sence efficiency wise the first time around.

I have used Gracey trimmer for bulk trimming before, but I use a Forster trimmer now. It works just fine for me.

I have a Girard set up for 223. I use Posum trimers with a electric drill for my 308 & .204 Ruger . RCBS & Lee trimmers for the odd ball stuff. Had a Dillon Power trimmer but it made to much noise and was a ***** to get it adjusted right.

                No question, get the Giraud.

If you are in Socal, you're welcome to stop by and use mine during the LA reloading clinic in Dec. Just let me know in advance.

+1 for Giraud. Once you have one you'll never use anything else.

I bought one of these several months back, but only put it through it's paces last week.

You still need to size your brass before hand, and chamfer / debur after, but for "trimming" this works very well.

I chucked mine up into a drill press, with an akro bin of 'to be trimmed' brass on one side and an akro bin for 'trimmed' brass on the other. I was able to trim ~200 pcs in 15 minutes.

If I shot a lot more .223 than I do (and was willing to spend $300 on trimming equipment), I would probably use a Dillon trim setup like Randall describes. Using a XL650 and case feeder, it seems an easy way to prep a LOT of brass in a hurry.

Gracey or Giraud for mass quantities of brass. I have a Giraud and would never give it up. A friend has a Gracey and he's happy as well. We both load for highpower, so we aren't as anal about trimmed length as a benchrest shooter might be. The Gracey/Giraud index off the shoulder, so if you have inconsistencies with the base to shoulder dimension, you'll have the same inconsistency in case trimmed length. I'll live with that because.......

I HATE brass prep and will buy almost ANYTHING to make it go faster. Next thing I'm considering is a Gracey primer pocket unit......
