Crimp requied on bullets that have cannelure?

I need to know if I have to crimp 55 grain fmjbt for a 223 if they have the crimp groove,(cannelure) or can I just seat them and not crimp?

My 55gr. 224 bullets have cannelures but i never crimp them. It is mainly for guns with magazines that have heavy recoil.

since there is just one reply to this thread, i figure ill get my post count up...

i crimp my .223 loads. they have cannelures, and i crimp them. if i had a bolt action .223, i may not worry about it. but since all my .223s are autoloading rifles, i crimp all the cases. even if i did have a bolt action, i would probably crimp them, since as long as they meet the oal requirements of the cartridge, and as such, fit in a .223 magazine, i could shoot them in my autoloaders as well. for a target load in a bolt gun, i dont think id shoot a projectile with cannelures anyways, so if any of these situations apply to you, then i hope my meager bits of advice have helped.

I shoot a mini 14. I always crimp my reloads for it.

The Lyman 47th Ed, says to use cannelured bullets & crimp them for use in semi autos. There was quite a discussion here last week about it . At the end, the score was tied...

Actually I only started collecting Milsurps 3 years ago. I think I might own about 24...They're cheaper than guns that will most likely never get the opportunity to kill somebody...

Crimp bullets if they have a cannelure. Plain and simple.

Folks that shoot uncrimped ammo out of Semi-guns are asking for trouble IMO.

FWIW there is no debate here.....it's either the right way or the incorrect way.

I've only fired about 2500 of my 55g, 223 reloads without crimping in my AR. No problems so far. The neck tension should be enough to avoid setback, Providing the neck is resized correctly. Crimping will increase pressure abit. The general rule is only crimp bullets with a cannelure. But it is not necessary. Just push test a few with out a crimp.
