    Wolf Primers for 5.56

I'm going to start re-loading for 5.56. Haven't bought an AR yet but have money set aside. I wanted to start getting the components now since I know how hard things have been to come by lately. I found that wolf has a few different kinds of primers and was wondering what you guys were using. Going to be used for tactically shooting, not more that 100yds and I'd be willing to say 90% of the time i'll be within 25-50 yards. Anyway here is what Wiedners has to say...

"SMALL RIFLE PRIMER (part # QQQSR) - Used as a standard small rifle primer. Perfect for the 30 carbine and 223 standard loads. Many people use this primer in bench and other loads for the 223. This primer is a copper colored primer.

SMALL RIFLE MAGNUM PRIMER (part# QQQSRM) - This is the primer we had before for use in the 5.56 loads and hot 223 loads. A thick cup for the higher pressure. We sold a lot of these primers earlier this year. The new lot is brass colored instead of nickel.

SMALL RIFLE 223 (part # QQQSR223) NEW NEW This is the newest primer available in the Wolf line. It is ever so slightly hotter than the small rifle magnum primer and it comes with a brass colored thick cup. This primer can be used in place of the SRM primer or used when a different powder is used that is hard to ignite.

Wolf primers look great. They are made in Russia and packaged in 100 rd trays in 1000 sleeves and 5000 cases. They are packed anvil up so no "primer flipping" required. They are ALL BRASS and our tests indicate excellent quality at a lower price than other primers.

Wolf Small Rifle Magnum primers have the same power as regular Wolf Small Rifle primers, but the cup is a little thicker and less sensitive. "

The books that I have all say to use SR primers. But it seems as if Wolf has made primers specifically for 5.56 or .223 Any Ideas?

I use just the plain old regular SR primers for my HighPower loads....

I have used all three and they all go bang. No slam fires with the sr primers. No soft strikes with the magnums or the sr .223's.

I have loaded the wolf SR primers with great results. I think thier primers may be hotter than the federals I was using as I had to reduce the powder load by 1 grn (H335) for the same results. Otherwise they worked great. I had a few problems with feeding in my dillon but it was not a big deal.

          1) Figure-out what grain bullets you are going to use.

          2) Figure-out what powder you are going to use that works best with the bullets you have chosen.

          3) THEN figure-out which primers will be best for the powder you have chosen.

Personally, I am using H335 powder, which Hodgen recommends matching with CCI Magnum primers. (Spherical powders work/ignite better with magnum primers). But I jumped on a few thousand Wolf SR Magnum Primers, and they are fine.

But in all honesty, I have not chronographed my loads yet.

PS: I forgot to mention, Wolf primers are also a touch larger. You will feel this when you are setting the primer in the primer pocket of the shell.
