My first batch of ammo was regular wolf, later I found out that you can't really use it at the range because it is steel core. I also know there is some wolf that is not steel core. How in God's name do I tell the difference? I've tried to research it but haven't had much luck. So I turn to my calguns family!! GUIDE ME TO THE LIGHT!! (i know i know the "light" should be buy better ammo all together but I'm in college, nough said)

Help with wolf ammo identification!

Most wolf is not steel core but bi-metal jacket and is magnetic. There is some old wolf stuff still around but currently not in production with full copper jacket, comes in black/yellow boxes and range safe…most of the ones I see are around 9-10$ per box.
PS: here is some for sale right now.
PPS: assuming you are asking about 7.62x39Last edited by Burnout; 09-29-2009, 1:22 AM. -
Take a magnet and see if it sticks to the bullet.
If the magnet does not stick to the bullet, then there's no steel in the bullet or jacket.Randall Rausch

I know the magnet trick but it doesnt help much when ordering online, I was wondering if there was something to look for that I missed, but so far it seems only the black/yellow box of wolf is non magnetic...?Comment

Wolf no longer makes any non-magnetic ammo in their steel-cased ammo product lines.
The black/yellow box is magnet now too.
There is some old black/yello stuff floating around with individuals that's non-magnetic, but any current stock you were to order will be magnetic.Randall Rausch

thanks, so it seems like the cheapest non-magnetic is going to be PMC or some military surp stuff? Cuz from what I hear all the bear lines are magnetic too, I have some brown bear but am assuming the silver and gold are magnetic as well. Damn I can barely afford this stupidly awesome hobby!!Comment

Yes, all of the bear/tiger/wolf lines are magnetic, except for the out of production Wolf stuff mentioned above. There is some Yugoslavian surplus 7.62x39 ammo on the market right now that is non-magnetic. Just be warned that it is corrosive primed, so you will need to clean your rifle with a water based cleaner right after you shoot it.thanks, so it seems like the cheapest non-magnetic is going to be PMC or some military surp stuff?
