    45ACP and Trailboss

Anyone load Trailboss into 45ACP? Got 5 lbs and it will take forever for me to use for what I bought it for. Just bought a 1911 full size, got a bunch of brass and a bunch of 200 gr SWCs for free so I'd like to try it.

BTW bought the trailboss for fire forming brass if you want to know.

I've used Trailboss in 45ACP. About 4grs will give you a light mild load. Since it's so bulky I doubt you could get more than about 5grs in the case before you would have to start compressing it, which is something you are NOT suppose to do.

I don't know about that, I have some 44 mag loads for the TC that are almost flush with the top of the case then I mash down the powder with the bullet. Would I shot these in a revolver? NO! but compressed loads happen.

I had read somewhere that IMR does not recommend Trail Boss be used in compressed loads. It is fine with many other powders. Many of the stouter rifle loads are compressed.

The above pic is Trail Boss powder, or it might be Cheerios Cereal. They both look about the same but, I have not tried Trail Boss with milk.

IMR specifically warns not to compress load Trailboss powder. Evidently, compressing Trailboss alters it's burnrate/pressure curve. Other powders are tolerant of compress loading but Trailboss is not one of them.

Well I shot my 45acps 200gr SWCs over 4 grains of trailboss and they shot real good. Didn't crony them but they must have been going pretty slow as the paper looked ripped as opposed to a nice punched hole. Cycled my new springfield just fine.

I've used as much as 4.5 gr of TB with 230gr ball bullets. No issues. Looks funny, smells funny, but it works just fine. And no way can you double-charge it.
