Check out this bullet I found! What is it??

Went hiking with my sons near Barstow on Saturday and found this bullet on the ground. It is .5" in diameter so, it is 50 cal. It looks like some type of AP round because there is an encased sharp projectile that attracts a magnet. The jacket in non magnetic. You can make out the rifling and what appears to be a smashed boat tail.

I've never seen anything like it. What can you tell me about it and the cartridge?

Probably either armor piercing (black tip) or armor piercing incendiary (silver tip) or armor piercing incendiary tracer (yellow/red tip):

Most likely it is from a Browning 50 cal. machine gun.

Most likely it is a standard 50BMG ball round. Both the AP and the ball use a steel core but the AP is hardend steel and not as big around. From the looks of the core I would say the one you found is ball.

Of all the 50BMG projectiles I've seen, the only bullets that have the "cut" cannelure is the 690-700 grain black-tipped AP armor piercing or the 643 grain API armor piercing incendiary silver tipped. All the rest use a standard knurled cannelure like most standard hunting rifle bullet cannelures. You can see in the pics provided that the black tip AP and the silver tip API have the cut cannelure. 50BMG bullet diameter is .510".

i dont think ball has a pointed tip.. i thought Ap or API only... a way to check is to put that tip to a grinding wheel and look at the sparks. then grab a peice of STD steel and grind that. compare the sparks.... you will know the difference. also you could try and mark it with a knife.... if you cant then most likely its either ap or api..... because the core is hardend.....

I'm with 50BMGBOB. It's standard ball! I'll try to find the pictures that topgun7 posted of my 50BMG ball cutaway. The core of the ball bullet is "pointy".
