    45-70 powder options

I have been using Trail Boss for 45-70 which makes for a comfortable plinking round. Friend found some IMR 4759 which shoots just as easy as the TB. Problem is we are just about out. What are other options that shoot soft like the TB and 4579? I have a screw in my shoulder so factory rounds and IMR 4895 hurt a tad too much!! Thanks

You can download IMR 3031 quite a bit for soft shooting loads (Trapdoor rifle pressure levels) but I don’t think anything available will give you Trailboss powder puff recoil.

I have a lot of 4759 which is useless to me. I got it in estate sale. Was going to use it to fertilize plants. PM me.

There are published recipes for things like unique. Certainly double or triple or more charges would be possible, so best used with caution.

Unique and 2400 used to be go to powders for reduced cast bullet loads.

              45-70 powder option

Used a bunch of my Unique recently on shot shell so being careful with what I have left. Local store had it the other day but wanted 400 bucks a keg. Too steep for my blood. 2400---that's a new one---I see that around quite a bit. Will have to keep that on in mind. Thanks.

You can also use IMR 4198 for Trapdoor pressure loads, and like 3031, it can also be loaded to fairly high velocity.

I have had good success with Unique and IMR 4227. I also like 4759 and still have a few ponds left.

P.s. Hodgdon has emailed people that late 2024 is likely to see Trailboss available again.

That?s great. I?d love to try some of that for my 45/70s.

Second for 4198. That is what I started using when I ran out of Trailboss.

I've been using Red Dot for 444 Marlin and 45-70. Works great. Almost no recoil, still pushes a big slug at mild velocity.
