Shopping list for beginner.

A buddy of mine up in Oregon has decided he wants to reload. He only plans to reload a 38 special and 7 mm rem mag. I told him to start with 38 and I?m trying to put together a list of stuff he will need to get started.

The following is just what I chose and what is working for me. First is or are at least 2-3 reloading manuals LYMAN, HORNADY, WESTERN POWDERS there are way more, Forster CoAx single stage for it is simple, ease of die changes, gives me the ideal view of what I'm doing, plenty of leverage, one set of jaws does many calibers. Frankford Arsenal Intellidropper powder dispenser/scale, compact, easy set up, quick, reliable, repeatable results, accurate enough from light loads to heavy loads, and a manual balance beam scale to check your other scale. Frankford Arsenal Wet Tumbler. Lyman case prep hand tool, Frankford Arsenal Premium Primer Seater, BERRY'S bullet puller hammer, HORNADY UNIQUE CASE LUBE, HARBOR FREIGHT digital calipers and extra batteries, couple different size/shape/color funnels, loading block, index cards.

For powders I just use UNIQUE, BULLSEYE, TITEGROUP, 231, CLAYS, and 700X when I can find it. Bullets I stick to mostly 158 grain. Lyman 358091, Lyman 358429, Lyman 358665 170 grain, 158 grain jacketed hollow points, and a bullet by MP molds that he calls a .359 hammer.

Im not an expert but the reason I use digital is my Lee charger is so inconsistent that it scared me. I?m sure it?s my fault, but I can?t get the darn thing to throw the same charge every time so I gave up and went digital. Why don?t you like digital?

The reason I didn?t pick a kit was my Lee kit was full of stuff I just never used. And my Lee classic turret works great I just should have spent the money on a T7
I will look at that kit though .

I have a manually indexed heavy duty turret press i never use in SFV. I have a new lee beam scale. He does not need more than a grand worth of equipment to load.

I can get him under a grand for sure. My goal with that list was to go nice where it matters and cheap where it doesn?t.

What turret? Wanting to let it go?

i will check tomorrow it is a 6 or 7 head turret press heavy duty. The guy I got it from was loading long magnum calibers. If you send me your contact info I can send pics.

Reloading takes a place to reload. And reloading soaks-up time. So if your buddy is looking to reload to pinch pennies...Not good. 2nd job would be more profitable.

He owns a successful company. He?s bought a house that came with an indoor reloading room and a huge safe. He?s got the space. He?s interested. I doubt he?s committed, but we hunt and fish together. So it?s in his ball park at least

I'm sure there's more gun shows up yonder than down california way. I'd shop that list of tools there first. There's always somebody kickn the bucket and his widow given the stuff away or tells his shooting buddy to make her some money since he's passed and you can't take it with ya. A harbor freight tumbler works great with walnut media for cleaning. Vinegar and soap to clean cases, or maybe a ultrasonic cleaner from same is 80$. Lotta ways to skin a cat, just takes patience. Good idear to start with a turret vs progressive press. I learned on a single stage lee with quick change bushings.

My turret press is a retting 6 station. Takes standard dies and shellholders. Cannot get into pms. Heavy out of steel weighs 40 pounds.

I have several Lee powder dispensers. I have never had a problem with inconsistency with any of them unless I tried to use big bulky powder like 700X. But powders ;ile that give problems in any dispenser.

What do you consider inconsistent? How big of an error are we talking about?

Digital scales are great. I bought a Frankford Arsenal that stays plugged in all the time. For years before that I used a small battery powered Frankford Arsenal scale. I still take it to the range in my reloading box.

Turret press is completely unnecessary unless he shoots IPSC and goes through a thousand rounds a week.

I really like the kits. I got a Lyman one cheap that nobody wanted because it came with .270 dies. I wonder where those dies went - I might have given them away. It came with stuff I wouldn't have bought starting out and would've had to buy later. Like a case trimmer.
