    Winchester 7.62X39 at Big 5

I was checking out the ammo pricing and selection at Big 5 and saw that they have 50 round loose pack boxes of the Winchester X39.
Not a super deal at about a buck a round, but it is reloadable brass, range safe. What was different is that it is of the small primer variety, interesting. Tempted to get some.

Ugh..... not another small primer..... I have been seeing some brass AK rounds at the range. When I bought mine I ordered 500rds of brass ammo so in the event I had to reload for it I could. Even got the .311 projos. I'm all out of steel but still have plenty of retail brass to shoot, good thing I don't shoot it a lot.

Interesting find OP. Wonder if they use a regular small rifle primers or a modified military small rifle primer? If memory serves, military rifles like the SKS should use military type primers since they can slam fire when not fully clean and the harden military primers offer a little safety.

I'm sure in a modern semi auto it's probably not an issue.

Someone needs to test this out for us!

It's been tested ad nauseam. Why do you think reloading manuals list the use of milspec primers in ammunition used in military weapons.
        Testing has been done.

I'm betting that they are using the proper magnum / military grade primers. It is FMJ ammo after all and (IMO) intended for the military platforms.
Cheap insurance (lawyer repellant) to use proper specification primers. Even the old small primer Remington ammo used the 7-1/2 size primers meant for higher pressures.

Good to have the option on which primers to use IMO.

              You're right!

I looked in my 49th Lyman reloading manual and they mention of small rifle primers being used in Remington brass.
