    300 savage

So I recently got a Remington 81 in 300 savage. It?s a nice gun needs some cleaning and light reset work which will be done soon. But now I?m making cartridges for it. I have a ton of 308 brass so I have converted them to 300 savage and in process I had a tone of m2 ball alternative bullets so I found my mix headstand brass that I was using as practice and made dummy?s. I think they look great. I?ll post pictures soon of my first 20 rifle cartridges I have ever made. Tried them out the magi ing and feed ramp is not liking the sprie point bullets well. It will feed some times it jams on cycling by hand. But I can only get 4 in the mag which I know can be common on this rifle. But I think it?s the bottom bullet hanging up on the mag. I need recommendations for 150-168 bullets to use with a round nose and preferably no boat tail. I was thinking of using 30-30 bullets

Have you tried any poly-tipped projectiles? Might be a possibility.

I would like more details on the 308>>300 conversion. I have a 300 Savage rifle and this may come in handy some day. BTW congrats on scoring the M81!

The conversion is easy stuff the 308 in a 300 savage die and bump the shoulder back and change the angle and then trim to length. The 300 savage is the parent case of 308

I always thought that the 30-06 was the parent case for .308.....just looked it up. Dang, learn something new every day.

Always looking for vintage Winchester and Marlin lever action rifles. Looking to sell? Know of one for sale? Drop me a line!

I've been saving up Winchester 150gr Savage 300. Have dies etc.

My plan is some 150gr spitzers over some 4064 to shoot in Savage 99. That should replicate the Winchester offering.

Never considered round points; that was the beauty of the 300 and the mdl 99, is to use pointy bullets that were close in performance of the 30-06.

Would also like to load some no-lead. Haven't thought about bullets for that yet... All of my deer hunting has been in Wyoming so haven't needed lead free yet.

The 303, 250-3000, 300 Savage development is interesting. While often overlooked now, they were the base for the 22-250 and the 308 (and 243 by way of 308).

Kind of interesting how they developed the 308 as basically a 300 Savage Improved. Little higher pressure, and optimized to feed in machine guns.

Although they are dated, the 250 and 300 Savage are still fine cartridges.

Years ago, some vendor was selling .300 Savage bullets really cheap, so I bought a thousand of them. Turns out they were Hornady SST bullets (still have about 100 left). I used them with good results in 30-06 and .308.

The thing is, although they were pointed polymer tipped, the tip was a lot more rounded and the tip was a lot shorter than a normal .30 caliber bullet. I assume to account for feeding? I've always wondered why the profile was so different, and it might account for the OP's feeding issue with "normal" .30 caliber bullets.

So I went to a local reloading shop looking for 30-30 projectiles and the old guys there told me just over seat the 30-06 bullets to feed so I took my dummy?s and pushed the bullet down and now it works fine. I did go and find some hornaday 30 cal poly tip projectiles that are shorter and have a higher canalure I?m going to try. I was planning on using 3031 or varget but no data for the varget. I?m a lil worried about over seating the bullet. But a being used in a long recoil action and b I like to load on the light side I?m not overly concerned. I?m not overly concerned about needing a round nose bullet as it?s a stack box mag just the shape of the front of the mag looks like it should be round nose. But I can?t find any loaded ammo to compare to
