M855 accuracy and consistency on 1:8?

I just bought some Lake City M855 to put away.

I was reading about them and they seem pretty accurate from reviews.

My primary DMR rifle is a 1:8 twist WOA upper. On paper, it should do well with 62 gr pills.

Has anyone tried m855 on a 1:8 barrel? Im pretty excited to try them.

855 is fundamentally inaccurate. Any time you try to center any sort of bimetal core/outer assembly, it won't exactly balance perfectly, which leads to inconsistency.

M855 is blaster ammo. The twist rate is fine, it works in a 9 twist too... It's just not precision ammo at all.

This. If you want an accuracy load, then you should consider Black Hills Mk262 equivalent ammo.

Have you shot it? What sort of results did you get?

It will do fine. Not excellent.

Your ammo should do well enough to hit the target, but i wouldn't expect too much!
Get a 100-200yd zero, then starting in Sept, the xtc highpower(sac valley) matches are back.I suggest trying 200-600yds to really get a feel for the ammo.

OP what is your barrel length?
I have reloaded a bunch of the steel tip 62g bullets and shot them from different barrels.
The best accuracy was in a 16" 1/9 barrel which gave about 2.5 moa. A good 20" 1/7 gave 5 moa with same ammo.
I consider m855 ammo "machine gun" ammo and no way marksman ammo.

OP has a DMR build which implies decent accuracy/precision requirements. M855 is terrible ammo for this use case as it not nearly MOA capable ammo. Try this: https://www.snipershide.com/shooting...ation.7012355/

If you don't reload go buy two boxes of FGMM 69gr shoot a few five round groups with it. Then shoot your M855 that will give you a base line of what you can expect.

M855 was designed to meet the 4 moa minimum standard. So 600 yards = 24" group minimum from an as issued rifle. Most likely closer to half that but still not great.

It's been a long time, but 4-5 moa/inch at 100. This was far far outside what I wanted. Gun shoots about 1-1.5 moa with better ammo.

I suspect you will be very disappointed. I keep a bunch of SS109 projectiles around, but when it comes to actually loading anything, I'll choose any projectile over it. Even for blasting ammo, I prefer using plain ole Hornady 55gr fmj, or the Midway Dogtown 55gr open tip.

Uhhhhh, no, "stellar" terminal performance maybe.....as it how it penetrates armor and yaws in tissue.

3-5 moa is plenty accurate for hitting a human.

You do not often see the three words in this article’s title used positively in the same sentence. Even so, I doubt that I am the only one who has discovered that certain M855 (and NATO SS109 equivalent) loads are actually good shooters. When I was still a G.I., one “Green Tip” round was as […]

As the others have said, in my Stag upper I get 3 moa with green tips, the same rifle shoots cloverleafs with just about anything else.
