Absolutely this. Lots of older reloading books have lots of recipies for powders that are no longer in vogue.
Always looking for vintage Winchester and Marlin lever action rifles. Looking to sell? Know of one for sale? Drop me a line!

All are compression formed, and seem to be pretty much interchangeable. I've been loading those with eh same load form an old Lyman book for a couple of decades. Killed lots of birds, shot thousands of rounds, no broken guns or other issues.

As far as CAS - just load 80gr of BP and call it good. Something like 4,000 PSI on those.
I have a bunch of the HS AA hulls stored, but have plenty of other hulls I prefer. Yes, the ones you list are for all intents and purposes interchangeable.

And ya, 3 drams of BP with a light 3/4 Oz payload would be very safe with authentic smoke.

I haven't made out my dying dib list though. There are some Calgunners that I want to see rewarded.

Ballistic Products has been great in that regard. They began real slow with there turn-around time, but it's much quicker now.

            Shotgun deaths are:

            A) obstructions
            B) wrong powder (like grabbed the Red Dot in place of the Blue Dot).

A wad or primer change isn't going to kill a shotgun. That said, there are "rules of thumb" when subbing a "hot" primer for a "std" primer and what types of loads have some "headroom".

If one is still concerned, lab testing is pretty affordable (like $25 for 5).

What are you trying to load and what components do you have/missing?

FWIW, shotgunworld has gobs more shotshell experience than CG.
Lab testing? Tell me about that. Southern California?

Give us an idea of what you have and what you want to achieve.... a lot of us have pretty deep reloading libraries.

You mail them shells that you loaded.
They test them in their pressure/velocity gun and give you results.

Very, very cool. Thank you my friend. I was trying to figure out some way I could do that myself. I know in the old days they used precise pieces of metal to check for distortion. Now there are transducers.

A pressure gun definitely opens up the option to load up some test shells that you THINK should be safe based on extrapolation of published data and then have the lab tell you how they actually tested.

If you had a bunch of components but could not get the exact powder to match a published recipe, lab testing with the powder you have would be the way to go.

I'm old and I'm indebted to a wife who has stuck with me through thick and thin. I need at least five years to make it up to her. Then again she used to be a race car driver so she knows the need for excitement.

Dirtlaw, what powders, hulls, primers and wads are you working with? I’d be happy to help you out. I load 12, 20, and 28 pretty successfully on the regular, and I suck at loading .410, only because I haven’t put the time and effort into getting it right.

700x (much like 800x) is a great shotshell powder, and is especially nice to have if you get into loading handgun calibers. However, IMO, Both are fairly dirty powders, which isn’t necessarily a bad thing if you’re shooting them out of a pump or brake barrel gun. But I’ve gummed up more than one autoloader (both inertia and gas guns) using 700x and 800x.

One other downside to these two powders is that they produce a very healthy amount of recoil, especially in 12 gauge. Just my two cents.

                                Happy reloading all.
