Primer "tension"

Apologize for another thread on tension, but what do you guys aim for (in thousandths) as the amount the primer diameter is larger than the diameter of the primer pocket FOR 12 guage shotgun hulls??? You don't want the primer to fall out, but I imagine a thousandth or two would do. What say you?

I use the impact tool that resizes shotshell primer pockets. It works and primers will fit tight.

I do not have any answers that cover tension for the tensioneers. You could use 'interference fit' but I believe it would slow you down because you would have to explain the meaning of 'Interference fit'.

I gotta ask the question..... if every reply is condescending and insulting to the general reloading public, of what use is any of the information that might be buried within?

I've been reloading for close to three decades. Don't claim to be an expert, but I've managed to keep all my fingers, my face, and my eyes intact while winning my share of competitions. But even if I fancied myself an "expert" I wouldn't author replies in the same tone as our resident termagant.

Because Guffy refuses to educate anyone. all the while claiming to be an expert. He runs on and on about obscure BS commenting on how wrong you are. All without any follow up as to the why. He should carry around a house plant to offset the oxygen he steels from the earth.

Early on, when I saw the title of the thread I was going to make a joke referencing the long-running "tensions" thing. Before I could get around to it, lo and behold the joke joined in on its own volition.

For me much of it is dealing with the current situation. Sure you can stock up on what you've been using, but what if you decide to change directions a bit during a period where nothing is available? I believe most everyone would agree that there is a level of danger in straying from a proven recipe. It needs to be done very cautiously. Maybe the message to manufacturers should be a plea for standards and uniformity -- who knows? In any event I've been trying to do some things with shotgun shells and unavailability of certain components has been a major drag. ===== New paragraph ===== Regarding the issue I was discussing at the start of this thread there is an interesting article by Terry Wieland in the latest (August 2022 No. 339) edition of "Handloader."

I don't think I've ever seen a size issue/difference with pistol or rifle primers (major brands like Winchester CCI, Remington, etc.). The size issue seems to be primarily in the shotgun primer arena, and mainly the difference between American and European.

Yes. Some European shotgun components seem to be the only items readily available. I'm hopeful that things are starting to settle down. The next cycle of good times I'm going to go in the direction of greater versatility.
