I need a trick for loading primers..

So did some reloading this afternoon and this is the first time using Federal Primers.

All I can say is wtf .... why does Federal package their primers on the sides?

I am used to Winchester trays where they are mostly face up, with a little piece of cardboard, all of the primers are right side up for Primer Tube loading.

What I did today was spill the federal primers onto a raised plastic lid, where I was able to tap the lid to get some of the primers to flip over.

Anyone have some tricks or tools to speed up my primer loading (short of the Dillion primer loader which is $300+). Thanks.

A picture of primer loading this afternoon:

    a primer flip tray
you can get them cheaper, but it's a ribbed side and a smooth side, you dump them in the ribbed side and shake it until they all flip.

Shake that lid back and forth gently and the primers will all become open side up because the bottom is heavier. Then put something on top like a piece of cardboard hold it there and flip it over. Then they will all be open end down.

Yup, primer flip tray, works great.

Dillon, RCBS and I'm sure most others make them. Plastic will be less expensive than the metal ones.

Is that some sort of bullet dispenser to the right of your photo (with a red base and smoke color top)?

If so, where did you find it?

Pet section of your local Walmart. It is just a food dispenser for a cat or small dog.

A little trick from the 1911 guys.

I recommend the RCBS square plastic flip tray. I had a Lyman round flip tray that works great for all primer packaging EXCEPT Federal. The Federal trays are too big. The RCBS square tray fits the Federal package perfectly.

I think the Dillon round tray is big enough, but it is more expensive.

I've heard two stories about why Federal's packaging is like that.

One is that the size of the packaging is related to the number of times they've had a box of primers go BOOM. Each time it goes BOOM, they work on spacing out the primers more. So, looking at Federal's packaging, they've must have had a couple BOOMS. Looking at CCI's packaging shows that they've probably never had a BOOM

The other story is that new regulations were being drafted to prevent BOOMs and the Federal guys jumped the gun and retooled their machinery to make the new packaging and started shipping them out in the new boxes. The new regulations never took, so nobody else retooled for the new regulations. But since Federal already had the machinery retooled, it wasn't worth re-retooling back to the older packaging.

Take your pick on which story you want, or maybe it is neither, I dunno.

Do you want an AOW or C&R SBS/SBR in CA?

+1 for the RCBS square tray.

haa you think cci is small check out the remington primers

i guess you could put them on a sheet of sandpaper like 150 grit and jiggle it that will flip them anvils up then put a piece of cardboard on top and flip them

the rcbs flip tray is best

I've given away a couple of the RCBS flip trays without trying them. I've got two Dillon ones that I'm happy with. At least, I'm glad the RCBS ones are going to good use.

At least you have primers to flip.
