    Problem may be solved

Making some ammunition measurements accurately can be a problem. It was causing issues for me. I think the issues have been resolved. An interesting journey.

I use one of these with no problems.

Holy Crap, I thought I was the only person in CrapOfornia that owned one. Got mine from my Dad. And used it a lot when setting up planers and moulding stickers in cabinet shops.

I also have a General Vernier Caliper that hasn't been out of the tool box in 30 yrs. It measures down to .001".

Funny thing is that an old tool may be an intermediate solution. The problem is repeatability and abnormalities in what I am measuring. 1. Repeatability. We either use a vernier or, hopefully for greater accuracy a dial indicator or the go - no go approach. Unless we have the funds for an optical comparator. Dial indicators tend to measure the same thing a bit differently each time the measurement is taken although consistency improves if you eliminate all variables such as pressure. 2. Abnormalities in object being measured. The dimensions of a round tend to vary if you take a similar measurement on a different spot on the round. My best solution here is to calculate based on the highest point. I am now using either (1) and old converted Mitotoyu height gage and (2) special jigs that hold the round firmly in place. There is an improvement, but I don't yet have all the parts.

I picked up an older optical comparator for $300.
It is really helpful on seeing/measuring things you can't measure with traditional contact measurement methods.
I probably don't make full use of it for many things I do though.

I think I have had it 8 or 9 years now.
I use it the most for measuring chamber reamers but it's also really helpful in doing sear/hammer work.

Finding a treasure at a good price can make a rough week good. I used to garage sale and once in a long while I would have a huge strike.

                      Mine was a craigslist find.
                      Nikon with 3 different lenses.
It has definitely paid for itself already after showing customers their hammer and sear relationships before and after working on them.

I gave away a ton of Nikon F stuff to one of my quasi-kids. Developing film back in the day was a kick. A lost art today.

Sorry. Last post was in response to AR15barrels. Hopefully next week I receive a ton of stuff from Ballistic Products. It's like waiting for Christmas morning to arrive!

Did you hear Nikon is leaving the SLR/DSLR market?
