I'm taking the plunge and going to start making my own slugs as the title suggests. What are your recommendations for equipment? If you live in Orange County, where do you secure your lead? In about 90 days I get unchained from my desk! Yay! I'm almost a short-timer. Shotgun reloading seems to me a bit of a specialty. Should shotgun reloaders have a separate Section?

Recommendations for casting slugs intended for smooth bore

Good for you. Remember lead is becoming hard to find everywhere. I recommend a cast iron Dutch oven and turkey fryer for processing lead and a Lee 4 20 bottom pouring pot for casting bullets (or should i say boolits) from clean lead. Lee key slugs molds are great for starting out but I really like the Lyman foster slug mold (I have an extra).
As for finding lead I don't find much at a good price in OC but be on the lookout for a scrap yard that will sale to the public. Look for scuba weights, fishing weights, wheel weights bla bla bla.... the real way is to network. Inform everyone you now that you want lead friend, family, co-workers, dentist, plumbers, roofers, everyone and ask that the ask around for you eventually you'll find plenty. Or buy form me I normally sell lead for under $2 a pound unless you want some really hard lead. I can't believe how much I enjoy shotshell reloading.
Don't forget you need to learn to test for ZINC. You don't want to contaminate any good lead with zinc.
Happy casting my friend.Last edited by BIGOX; 06-18-2022, 4:43 PM.Reloading Supplies of all types (PRESSES, POWDERS, PRIMERS, DIES, BRASS, MANUEL'S, TRIMMERS, LEAD, CASTING EQUIPMENT AND MORE) (NEW, USED, OLD, VINTAGE, DISCONTINUED, HARD TO FIND)

I just buy online from rotometals.com they have a bit of a sale right now. Also RMR bullets has some decent lead for an alright price shipped and tax free.
I started with a lyman ladel furnace, but quickly went to lee bottom drop pot. Midway usa I got the lee pot.
I cast with both lee slug molds. They are pretty good. Been eyeballing lyman slug molds. Get the lyman book too, it has good slug data but does not include lee.
ballisticproducts will have much of what you need including at times preprimed hulls, and manuals.
Its great when you dial it in, get your load stack right and decent accuracy, it feels good. I have some YT videos on slugs and data, shaunstayfree is my yt handle.Join FPC https://www.firearmspolicy.org/Comment

Rotometals is a great source for lead that you know exactly its composition. A little expensive but you know what your getting. I've had good and bad luck with buying random lead. So learn to test for zinc if buying in person from unknown sources.
I would also recommend a copy of the Lyman cast bullets manual and a lead thermometer these will really come in handy. Check out Titan Reloading for grate deals on casting equipment and molds.Reloading Supplies of all types (PRESSES, POWDERS, PRIMERS, DIES, BRASS, MANUEL'S, TRIMMERS, LEAD, CASTING EQUIPMENT AND MORE) (NEW, USED, OLD, VINTAGE, DISCONTINUED, HARD TO FIND)
