It's an old bit of gun lore that weight sorting bulk 22LR ammo is almost as good as buying Match Grade ammo. I put that theory to the test, partially out of curiosity and partly out of necessity as I haven't seen match grade Eley, RWS, SK etc. ammo sold in any Bay Area gun store since 2020.

I haven't tested Match grade 22LR because honestly I haven't been able to find any at Sportsman's, Bass Pro or Big 5 since the pandemic started. But that's what the older members of my club tell me when they've weighed their ammo (TeneX, Midas, etc.) they haven't seen enough variation for it to be worth the effort. But some really anal competition guys, inspect every round for a major match.

What I can tell you is that I managed to get 1st place in a 100yrd match in February using weight sorted Federal whilst the rest of my competition was using CCI standard, Rem. Eley Match, and Eley Target. https://youtu.be/MVjaY-AHt_0

The serious shooters in my club say that they visually inspect their ammo but they don't bother weight sorting match grade ammo anymore because they didn't find much variance in it. They told me I'd be better off finding a Match Grade ammo that my rifle likes and then noting the batch and lot and buying a pallet of it. Though with ammo prices nowadays, I think I'll be doing more weighing in the near future.

Serious question.

You weigh ammo and the weighed groups all shoot different with different levels of accuracy.

You realize that the ammo in total isn't more accurate and that any accuracy you think is obtained by weighing is coincidence right? I mean you couldn't find some pattern where one weight was more accurate than another weight across different 50 round boxes. In fact, two groups of ammo that weighed exactly the same aren't the same because the difference in the powder charge and difference in projectile weight could be the reason. One group could have a slightly lower powder charge while another could have projectiles slightly lower but both groups could weight the same.

If it's just something to do, who is to say it's not worth it, a hobby is a hobby and lord knows we all picked a rather expensive one compared to playing checkers.
