    I called Alliant asking about Reloder 16

    I called Alliant asking about Reloder 16. I havent seen the stuff on shelves in over a year.

    They said they never stopped producing. That production remains the same, and that demand is just outpacing supply.

    That sucks. It doesnt look like I'm gonna see that powder soon.

    There is no relief in sight. I'm down to my last 8 pound jug

        Reloder 16 is a good medium rifle cartridge powder. It looks as if you'll have to switch to something that's available? Hunting? Target? Calibers?

              Without knowing what caliber you're using if for...

              .30-06 requires somewhere around 55-60 grains per cartridge. Let's call it 60, so you could load 115 cartridges per pound. Close to 1k rounds in that 8 lb jug.

                    4350 is ambiguous. There's H4350, A4350, and IMR4350. H4350 is probably the least temperature sensitive and is very popular with people shooting Creedmoor cartridges. H4350 is super accurate in my 6mm Creedmoor.

                        True but that doesn't take into account the temperature sensitivity thing. H4350 is the most popular powder for the PRS crowd. I find it to be pretty accurate. YMMV

                          People make a big stink about temperature sensitivity but in reality, we don't see big enough temperature changes throughout a day for it to really matter.
                          Even with how temperature sensitive one powder or another may be, you still have to adjust dope throughout the day just from the air density changes.
                          So it realistically matters little if there is also 5-10fps difference in change throughout the day from the powder when you already have a 40fps change in H4350.
                          The difference in dope between really temperature sensitive powder and not really temperature sensitive is smaller than the air density dope changes throughout a day to the point that when I ran IMR4350, i didn't really see a difference in my dope vs H4350.

                          Comparing H4350 against IMR4350 against AA4350 in Quickload, I get the following results:

                          H4350 110 2783fps
                          40 degree delta 45fps

                          40 degree delta 46fps

                          IMR and Hodgdon compared at the exact same charge weight while I had to drop 0.8gr with Accurate.
                          This is with a 142gr SMK in a 6.5 Creedmoor with a 26" barrel.

                          So how about those huge temperature sensitivity differences?
                          Just because one powder is considered temperature insensetive does not automatically mean that other powders are more temperature sensetive.
                          Hodgdon just has better marketing.

                          Now maybe this mythical difference in sensetivity shows up more at higher pressures so lets push up to 65,000 psi at 110 degrees and then drop the temperature back down to 70 degrees for our next comparison:

                          H4350 70 2815fps
                          H4350 110 2858fps
                          40 degree delta 38fps

                          IMR4350 70 2814fps
                          IMR4350 110 2857fps
                          40 degree delta 38fps

                          AA4350 70 2841fps
                          AA4350 110 2884fps
                          40 degree delta 43fps

                          Of course other powers will have bigger swings right?
                          I was just comparing the 4350's since that's what we are talking about.

                          Here is Winchester 760 (a ball powder because ball powders are notably more temperature sensitive than stick powders):

                          W760 70 2737fps
                          W760 110 2786fps
                          40 degree delta 49fps

                          So there's our big temperature sensitivity.
                          Over a 40 degree temperature shift, W760 has a 10fps bigger FPS deviation than H4350.

                            Kudos to you for doing diligent computer modeling (sincerely) which does need empirical confirmation however. The Ineos bike racing team has a philosophy of accumulating "marginal gains" in which the aggregation of all small advantages results in real improvements and they and their predecessor Sky realized great results in the TdF as a result. In the end, using recent high level competition data in conjunction with the theory of revealed preferences (cf Samuelson 1938), PRS competitors much prefer H4350, so for PRS use cases, the market has spoken. I get it, use what you can get, but I choose H4350 when it is an option and I currently have an adequate stash. As I mentioned to you in a different thread, you do you and I'll do me.

                              PRS is cool and all, but it was a rl16 thread. I was already recommending substitutes for an unavailable powder.

                              A good, workable powder in stock beats a better powder you can't find. Sometimes the in stock one surprises you anyway.
