    Hornady lnl help

    I am I the process of loading up some .223/556. It is all mixed brass. My problem is when I try to resize neither my rcbs or redding die works. I run out of threads before I can get the case properly sized. When I move the die to my rock chucker it works fine but a lot slower. Any suggestions.

    Mentioned in that thread, might help:

    If you ever setup a progressive press to cam over, you need to put 2 more dies across the shellplate also against the shellplate as well to support the shellplate platform from being bent if you are camming the press over with only 1 die hard against the shellplate.

      Considering possible trim and case prep, it might be better to single stage resize?

        The LNL press shellplate flexes.a.little.
        You will need to over cam a little.
        Set your die till it touches the shellplate. Turn the die down 1/16 of a.turn more.
        Run a couple of brass and check with your case guage..
        You may need to lower the die more but not much.

        I process.my 223 out of a 2 gallon bucket. Do half.a.bucket and take a break.
        Check pieces of brass at.random with case guage.
        Been gone too long. It's been 15 to 20 years since i had to shelf my guns. Those early years sucked.

          I know, when a reloader suggest 'cam over' other reloaders believes the person giving the advice knows what they are talking about; well not really because, when it comes to cam over none of them know what they are talking about.

          When a press cams over the die ram moves away from the die.

          In a non cam over press when screwing the die down to the shell holder the case is crushed between the die and ram/shell holder.

          Again, a smith, reloader, builder of rifles called to complained about his press; he claimed it was locked up. He was about to stick a pipe onto the handle when I offered to help. At the time there was nothing I had that he did not have so I did not take any tools. To lower the ram I screwed the die out until the ram cleared the die. Once the shell holder/ram cleared the bottom of the die I measured the clearance/gap, there was .037" clearance between the bottom of the die and shell holder. I told him the .035" was the amount of cam over, and he still did not understand.

            At one time I had 4 Rock Chucker presses, none of my Rock Chucker presses cammed over, if anything they locked up, jammed up or went into a bind but the one thing the Rock Chucker will not do is 'CAM OVER".

            I have 12+ Herter presses, all of my Herter presses cam over, they do not cam over by much but they all cam over. It beats all, when we are born we forget all the information learned by those before us. Before us there was a company that invented auto locking plyers, and now we have forgotten what they named those plyers.

              Are you talking about Vise-Grips pliers? Or was there one out earlier than those?

                Do not cam over. Full length resizing is:
                Raise shell plate all the way up.
                Screw die body down until it just touches shell plate.
                Lower ram and insert case
                Raise ram and, with case in die, lock die down onto bushing (even a half turn of locking ring is more than enough to hold die). At that point, bulge busting or roll sizing will be needed.

                If your case won't chamber after sizing, there is an issue somewhere around the web to case head or sizing die is bad.
                The only time I tried camming over was for bullet seating, and COL consistency was not improved (that was with a RockChucker in '70s).
                First rule: follow loading manual and die instructions. Web gurus only know what they think works for them. It might work OK for you, but first follow actual published instruction for your equipment.

                  fguffey, why is it all or at least most of what you say, goes against EVERYTHING what others say? What exactly makes you know more than others here?
                  Are you an accomplished gunsmith? Some sort of factory/tech wizard? What is it exactly that gives you this knowledge to refute damn near anything posted?
                  Please explain. Honestly.

                    The LnL is sometimes right on the edge of allowing some dies to adjust deep enough. I've had issues with different die brands that required the thickness of the bushing to be machined down so the die could reach the shell plate. Here's one example of a Lee die that wouldn't thread in deep enough to work properly so I had to cut down the LnL bushing.

                      Not sure on the LNL, but on some presses that have a similar problem, people have moved the lock ring to the bottom of the press head.

                        OP with all due respect bottle neck cartridges should not be simply loaded with every step (Size, Prime, Charge and Seat) on a progressive press as one would for pistol. Case length needs to be determined prior to proceeding trimming may be needed and if so could cause a serious pressure problem. Many and I as a reloading instructor would correctly recommend case prep on a single station, then and only then Prime, Charge and Seat on your progressive press.

                          divingin, very good, Had I said vise grips everyone else would insist the vise grip plyers was a cam over design. Back before everyone forgot everything Vise Grip, the company claimed the plyers had a 'leaver lock' design.

                          We had a friend that like us went to work in the oil field, he was loading drill pipe and chaining the pipe down when a boomer let go. The handle/leaver hit him in the head. When using a boomer, it was important to throw a chain hitch around the frame and handle. He was lucky, the accident did not kill him, he was taken to the hospital. They replaced a big part of his skull with a metal plate. The chain boomer worked on the leaver lock design.

                            The Rock Chucker was not a cam-over press, It locked up, it would jam up and the ram would move forward at the top and back at the bottom; it was accused by reloaders that spent a lot of time with their hands in their pockets of being a cam-over press.

                              They forgot; I still have one, I have two Piggyback RCBS presses complete with presses, the Rock Chucker! One Piggyback started out as a #1 and then was updated to a #2.

                              They forgot but sold the part for the Piggyback for many years, the parts included a one-way clutch, if the Rock Chucker was a cam-over press the press would bust the one-way clutch ever time the press cammed over.
