    Shockingly slow velocities...

Got a weird one, and looking for explanations that I may be overlooking.

My 18" AR15 (.223 wylde) loves the 73 grain bergers and the 75gr Hornady HPBT. Easily sub 3/4 moa, and often 1/2. Whats weird is how damn slow they are compared to published velocities.

    Example:

73gr Berger w/ 24.5 grains of Varget- avg 2670 FPS
Bergers MAX load is 23.3 with an estimated velocity of 2840.

Thats right, Im 1.2 grains over max (no pressure signs whatsoever) and coming up almost 200 FPS slower with an 18" barrel.

The Hornady comes up almost 300 FPS slow using the max published charge.

All other guns I test, the chrono results are rather consistent with published estimates.

The only thing I can think is that enough pressure is "leaked" to cycle the action, and the published velocities in Bergers manual are using a longer barreled bolt gun.

Barrel length has a big effect on velocity. Every inch adds 20 or more fps, especially slower powders and or heavier bullets. Let's say the berger test barrel is 24 inch, that 6 inches more will add over 100 fps.

No idea if they have updated info but I've said they need to have an AR section for reloading with 16", 18", 20" barrels with at least standard calibers. Most reloading info is bolt action 20"+ barrels or old antiquated firearms for service rifle data.

In the Sierra # VI manual, they have a 223 section using a 20"Colt AR-15 as the test rifle.

Their max load with Varget and their 77 OTM is 23.9 grs. @ 2550 FPS.

They also have a Bolt gun section in 223 using a 24" universal receiver. They show a max of 22.1 grs. of Varget with their 77 OTM @ 2650 FPS.

You're in the Ball Park with that 18" barrel.

            Thats all in your barrel.
Test barrel are at least 20" more often 24"

Also loading to max or beyond does not always mean highest velocity or most accurate.ore often under max will achieve better results

Yep, your shorter barrel is the reason. Also, what's your rifling twist?
