using pulled bullets in 454 casull

Friend of mine gave me about 85 335g cast bullets that he picked up at a gun show. These were pulled for whatever reason we don't know. There is a little powder of what type I don't know stuck to the lube on these bullets. I'm intending to load them just for plinking. Any reason to worry about the very small amount of powder stuck to the lube? Very few granules stuck to the powder. Plan on loading them with bout 23g of h4227. Thanks.....captn-tin... I'd use 'em.

Use them, maybe try and wipe the powder off with a shop towel

If you're really that concerned, a little washing in some mineral spirits should take care of anything. Or, just wipe 'em since it's only 85 of 'em.

After that, load 'em up, shoot 'em, and enjoy the resulting grin on your face. :-)

          Old bones

I'm 77 years old. The grin on my face is nothing compared to the frown on my wrist, elbow and shoulder after popping off a few rounds out of either of my Freedom Arms 454s. Still fun to do.

You can soft load them using load data from Freedom Arms:

Look down the list of starting loads.

No reason to worry about the small amount of power but might want to check hardness of the bullet and its diameter. Or put a bullet in a vise and give it a whack with a hammer. If it fragments the lead is too tough and brittle. You don't want it too soft either.

For those bullets, if one wants a "soft" load (that word obviously being relative here), I'd suggest 22 grains of 2400 underneath it.

I'd also use some Xlox, or Lee Liquid Alox, on them. The "lube" that I see too often on store-bought bullets has not proved effective in my experience. Xlox fixes that problem.
