Portuguese 7.62x51 ammo

My FAL enjoyed it and it shot well.

I got mines at the Great Western Gun show when it was last at Pomona back in '99 and a big three day sale.
CAVIM and South African.

$25 a battle pack if I remember right.

Guy had 10 of them and offered all for $200.
Still have one pack left.

I just got an M1A and would like to shoot some through it.

I need to check my stash of 7.62x51 and see if any of it has steel in it. I also have an M1A and bought a few thousand rounds for it several years ago.

The M1A is one of the most fantastic rifles I have ever owned (and I have owned a bunch over the past few decades). I predict you are going to love it.

M80 isn't magnetic.....I have some and have shot a lot of it, I've never shot any that was magnetic..

The steel is the bimetallic jacket. Core is lead

The bimetallic wears out a barrel 4 times faster than copper according to lucky gunner tests.

GOOD STUFF ! shot mucho of it over the past years when it was plentiful. Yes Cavim, South American ammo, a bit hotter than others. I still have alot of all of the brands described above.

CAVIM was Venezuelan made ammo, totally different than the Port ammo you have.

M80 isn't magnetic.....I have some and have shot a lot of it, I've never shot any that was magnetic..

Standard USGI M-80 ball specification calls for a Bi metal steel jacket. US Military M-80 is steel jacketed.

There's a lot of aftermarket / foreign 7.62 X 51 that is labeled "M-80" that is not steel jacketed. Most of the European mgf. 7.62 NATO ammo is not steel jacketed.

Use a magnet to see if the ammo is steel jacketed.

I have some that is. Lake City.

Most military 7.62x51 is metallic. I don't think I have any that isn't.

I used to have quite a few cases of various 7.62x51. Most of it was stolen, including more than a dozen USGI M60 belts. Some of it was recovered by police.

The 2 on the left are magnetic. The rest is not. The stamp on the single round is FN 77 and includes the nato mark.


In addition to the above, I have a bunch of MEN stored someplace. I don't think it's magnetic but don't remember...

Is that box marked "M118" USGI? I've never seen US ammo in a box like that.
