All of my best hunting loads were Sierra 165gr BTHP Gamekings over 4064. Tack drivers...

But that was pre lead ban, or used out of state.

Will be curious what you settle on, as I want to load some 300 Savage lead free; is similar to 308(300 Savage was the base cartridge used for 308).

Cfe 223 is this most accurate 308 powder I've ever loaded.

for the barnes bullets in the 308win I would use 130gr TTSX or max of 150gr TTSX.
A 30cal will reach out and touch them. A 50cal will kick their butt.

For California hunting, your choices are limited to:
              Barnes
              180gr TSX BT
              168gr TTSX BT
              165gr TTSX BT

Using a 308 then really eliminates the 180 so stick with the lighter two.
Of those powders above, RL15 is your best option.
The rest of the powders are too fast.

You would do better with a slightly lighter bullet that could be driven faster for more energy on target.

You might not get the velocity you want for reliable expansion on those copper bullets, if you stick to the 165's. I'd look at 150gr TTSX for the .308, or even better 130gr.

I found the 168 TTSX really picky about lead into the throat. At mag length and typical deeeeep throat of a factory Remington barrel, I had like 3/16" of jump and the accuracy was poor (1.75-2.00" group in a barrel that will put 175 SMK's into 3/4") When I seated the bullets out to for .050" jump, the groups came down to just under an inch. But they have be hand loaded one at a time being so long.
