    Winchester 30-30 Reload Issue

    Hello,

I'm starting to reload 30-30 Winchester and am encountering an issue.
    Here's the setup:

Redding Full length Die/bullet seating set
    Hornady FTX 160gr projectiles
    RCBS single stage rockchucker
    H4895
    Brass PPU 30-30 New

My issue is I am not able to seat the projectile in the case far enough to meet the cannelure and the max C.O.L.

I'm following the directions exactly from the Hornady book for reloading for the Winchester Model 94

    Max C.O.L. for 30-30: 2.550
C.O.L. for the specific load I'm making: 2.535

I can only get it to a length of: 2.606

Edit: I also submitted my question to Redding, as I may need to order a customer bullet seater.

    Any ideas?

You may have too much powder in the case. Try loading a round with less powder to see if the bullet will seat at the proper depth.

NO - his bullet seating rod in the die won't go far enough down.
Are you using flat tip bullets? What is the design of the bullet seater? Do you have another seater in a different 30 cal die that may be longer? Do you have the outer/crimp die set low enough?

Those FTX bullets are pointed. 30-30 bullets are usually round or soft tip.
You may need a different bullet seater..
Or your die is not setup correctly.
Been gone too long. It's been 15 to 20 years since i had to shelf my guns. Those early years sucked.
I really miss the good old Pomona Gun Shows.
        I'm Back.

I started with minimum load. The case is not full.

I am using Hornady FTX. Link is below.

I have the die setup to specifications to not allow crimp. Set all the way in to make contact with the ram in the upward position, then back out the die one full turn. This is standard setup per the directions on each reading bullet eating die I have. If I turn in the die itself more, it will start creating a crimp which I do not want since the bullet is not seating towards the canalure.

I do have another die set for 30.06. I actually tried using that bullet seating plug and same issue.

Update: Redding got back to me and they are sending me a #7 seat plug which should resolve the issue. No charge. Thanks Redding!
