I've got a couple of 5 gal buckets of brass that have been stored outside. Water got into them and the brass looks pretty bad. After a week of tumbling, I got one batch to look great. I don't want to tumble all of it that long so, I'm trying tumbling in glass beads right now. I know a commercial reloader who has used sand and got an interesting satin finish. But, I think the glass beads would do better. Does anyone else have a better idea?

I would warn you that the brass is probably now unsafe to use after being exposed to water. In fact, its probably a hazardous waste type situation. Only touch it with a full hazmat suit.
Just send it to me and I will dispose of it at no charge to you.
On a more serious note, why not just a run a small batch both ways. I might be a little nervous that the sand or beads would be too abrasive and might actually damage the cases but never having tried it I just don't know.bob

I'd recommend trying Lyman Tuff Nut if you haven't already.

I think the glass beads or ceramic beads will do the job. But then, if it tarnished so badly, I will just throw them away and buy new ones. I just got 500 Lapua 223 brass delivered along with 16 pounds of VV N140 powder today.

i suggest tumble it and load it ugly and just leave it at a rangeComment

Go to Autozone, Kragen, Walmart or Target.... get Nu Finish auto polish.... put like 1/2 a cap-full into your tumbler.... your brass will come out shiny!

I had use various polish before, some stuff from Midway, some from Dillon... but at the end... this Nu gives me the BEST result...- LL

Actually I only started collecting Milsurps 3 years ago. I think I might own about 24...They're cheaper than guns that will most likely never get the opportunity to kill somebody...
I belong to the group that uses firearms, and knows which bathroom to use.

Wouldn't sand actually start grinding away at the brass? That seems like a bad idea to me.
