I wouldnt dump loose ammo in a can unless it was for regular range use, not for long term storage

since I do keep records of round count for each shooting trip, keeping ammo in original boxes helps keep track of how much ammo was used that day.

I empty 50 round boxes of .22 LR into small plastic containers that hold about 300 rounds with end of one box to ID. Much easier to store, take to the range and load mags rather than fiddling with the boxes.

Wait, I didn't read everyone's posts but I believe in some cases the retail pack is actually minimized like the S&B9mm or Magtech cause they don't use Styrofoam. I swear I can get more in there when they are organized. It's also easier to limit your use, grab 2 boxes and go, instead of taking the whole can.

I use a loader that grabs them from the head/rim so even though I have my reloaded ammo in cans I preload them in special trays before going to the range. For 556 I put 100 in the MTM boxes upside down again, so my loader can grab it easier.

Steel storage cans that are filled with amom in factory boxes are pretty heavy. Depending on the type of internal packaging you can probably save some space by getting rid of styrofoam or the plastic holders used with some rifle rounds, but I cant imagine it's more than 10-15% Obtaining those savings come with certain costs and disadvantages as others have pointed out.

I keep all of my factory rounds in factory boxes and my hand loads (rifle) in MTM boxes. Bricks of .22lr sits\ in the bottom of my "safe", thereby making it more difficult to tip over.

For handgun ammo I load and shoot in bulk (not factory ammo,) I keep it loose in military style ammo cans labeled with the load data. All loads in an ammo can are the same. Having a few thousand .45 ACP rounds, for example, loaded identically and used for range and match use are much easier to store. This is not ever for any resale purpose. My son and grandson will have no problem shooting it up after I am gone.

I’m one of those who always keeps ammo in the original packaging. If it’s bulk ammo or ammo I’ve reloaded, it goes in MTM type containers with the load information. Although this may take up more space, I find it’s more organized. It’s also easier to grab just what I need for a given range trip.

Also, as others have pointed out, the weight of an ammo can with loose ammo can get heavy.

Yes, I knew, lately I got a "primer dramatized disease", when I see any CCI blue box, I always thought that is the CCI primer box,

I used to keep everything in 50rd boxes. There's just no need to do that. Especially in an emergency, that's tons of unecessary bulk. It all goes into 30 or 50 cal ammo cans now and im happy to have the space back.

I load 100rd trays for the range, and 50rd trays if I'm testing loads or doing weird stuff.

Depending on the packaging, you aren't saving much/any room. The difference will be vacant space if using ammo cans.

But 95% of my ammo is reloads and I use 30 cal cans for most metallics to keep the weight manageable.

Have the space to store in factory package but noticed long term storage issue.
Purchased cans and desiccant.
Hopefully will no longer need to check up on condition.
Never thought storing indoors that it would happen.
Maybe during shipping or store stocking they had been exposed to moisture



During the 2016, 2017, 2018, 2019 ammo rebate days had lots of family and friends getting rebate checks/cards....

$60/300 .45 = .20rd
$65/300 .223 = .22rd
All range ammo.

50cal cans $9.00/$15.00 for used #1
Problem is storing empty cans.

Remember trying to get .22LR.......told myself never again.
