    Difference in Primers?

Since I started reloading I've always been curious what the difference in primers are...
Small Magnum vs Small Rifle vs Small Pistol
Large Rifle Vs Large Pistol etc

Anyone up to speed on the specific differences?

Rifle primers are hotter and have harder primer cups than pistol primers. Magnum primers are hotter than standard primers.

This one says pretty much the same as J-cat, but uses way more words. Also gives a list of primer part numbers for different manufacturers.

I don't have a link, but search around, there is also a web page out there that has some pretty good photos that show the fire trail given off by various different primers.

When you reload these are things you want to know. Currently I have several thousand small rifle primers, but no small magnum pistol primers. I want to make some .357 Magnum, so knowing if small rifle primers will work would be great info to have.

              Ah Grasshopper..........

A wise reloader knows that before Magnum Pistol Primers were born that reloaders used Small Rifle primers. The pioneer in this regard was the late

I've only been reloading for about a year and a half now, so I'm still in the picking up knowledge phase of reloading

what kind of SRP do you have? I could trade you some Win SPMP for SRP. 1 for 1 trade.

My small rifle primers are Federal Match Grade primers. I think I will try 50 of them before trading.

there is a good article on primers in the newest shooting times

i read some article that had my head spinning somewhere

where the author i think was being purposly obtuse

explaining there is basically 2 yea 2 kinds of priming the large and small primer also there is shotgun primers
and of those 2 primers there is pistol and rifle and of those there is magnum standard and match match just being expensive standard or magnum oh yea there is also 50 bmg primers

so basicaly there seems to be i guess many different primers are there magnum match primers?

                        small pistol
                        small pistol magnum
                        small pistol match
                        small pistol match magnum?
                        small rifle
                        small rifle match
                        small rifle magnum
                        small rifle magnum match
                        large pistol
                        large pistol magnum
                        large pistol match
                        large pistol magnum match?
                        large rifle
                        large rifle magnum
                        large rifle match
                        large rifle magnum match
                        50 bmg
                        shotgun

                        then there are percussion caps
                        i know of #10 and #11
