45-70 350 gr hard cast

Go to loading manuals find loads that start out at @1200fps and work up from there.
5744 works well in .45-70's with cast boolits. My standard load with a 325 gr boolit is 33 gr of 5744.
45 gr of 4895 sounds a little stiff to me, and 4895 is not really a good powder for this round. Find loads for 3031, 5744, W748.
make sure to get a good Roll Crimp on the boolit.

ToBook of Lee has a load for a 350 gr jacketed bullet and IMR4895 in their model 95 lever action section.
Start 57.5 gr (compressed load)
Max 61.0 gr (compressed load)
Also a jacketed 300 gr bullet load in their .45-70 US GOVT section for IMR4895.

Goal is to have something to shoot it a bit, get used to it and confirm the barrel indeed works. I like the 40gr suggestion, 4895 is a bit flexible in terms of loads so I'll measure it out and see how much case capacity is left over. Or find a better powder while I'm waiting for the bullets to arrive.Comment
