    Bullet weight

I am re-starting reloading after many years. I received the bullets I ordered today. I ordered 40 S&W 180g. I weighed a few and all were over but not by much i.e. 183, 185,186 etc. How much tolerance is normal? Should I be concerned? Thanks.

    OK

    I want to play????

    Who makes the bullets?
    Cast Lead?
    Powder Coated?
    FMJ?
    Plated

For a quality JHP or Semi Jacketed projectile- that is not good.... not good at all

    For Lead... no worries
Rule 1- ALL GUNS ARE ALWAYS LOADED

Rule 2 -NEVER LET THE MUZZLE COVER ANYTHING YOU ARE NOT PREPARED TO DESTROY (including your hands and legs)

Rule 3 -KEEP YOUR FINGER OFF THE TRIGGER UNTIL YOUR SIGHTS ARE ON THE TARGET

Rule 4 -BE SURE OF YOUR TARGET AND WHAT IS BEYOND IT
    (thanks to Jeff Cooper)

Not for lead cast and/or coated. Honestly, the weight difference won't even be apparent at 25yds.

Even the Nosler 2nds I've bought over the years have never been off in weight.

About 1.0gr variance is normal for bulk bullets.

Not nearly enough variance to make any discernable pressure difference.

And unless your "HOLD", is a solid as a RANSOM REST. You will never see any accuracy difference.

Is that a regular bullet or name brand/tournament bullet ?

Not great for consistency but what is your goal?
                • Practicing self defense shooting
                • Simple proficiency with a 40 S&W
                • Economical plinking
                • Precision target shooting
                • Competition

For anything other than Precision target shooting, I doubt you'll notice the difference and it probably won't affect your shooting.

At 10 yards and in, it really won't make a difference. Load 'em up and shoot 'em.

If you think it makes a difference, sort out a couple dozen, try a couple of magazine loads of a consistent weight, then a couple of mags worth of random weights and see if it makes a difference.

If it doesn't make a difference, now you won't care about the randomness of the bullets you load. If it does make a difference, sort 'em out, load by weight and don't order from that company again.

What make/model scale was used. Do you have calibration weights ? Precision and accuracy issues apply to weighing things.
