Would you throw the whole batch?

I'm pretty sure I'm on my 5th or 6th loading. FL every time. Nosler brass, .338LM. Moving on to my Hornady brass. I think I'll just get Lapua brass next time.

How about annealing and neck sizing?

      Throw those away.
Been gone too long. It's been 15 to 20 years since i had to shelf my guns. Those early years sucked.
I really miss the good old Pomona Gun Shows.

I anneal the neck. Neck sizing for me in the past always seemed kind of strange. You have to eventually full length due to expansion. I had a 308 that was hard to lift after a few neck sizings that forced me to full size again.

When you do that , isn't there a load that will be not the same as the others with a full length size? So I just do it the same every time to get the same consistency.

Just out of curiosity how much of a shoulder bump are you doing with the FL sizing?

A lot of shooters complain that Hornady brass get loose primer pockets pretty quickly.

Run a paper clip in there to be sure but that bright line around the circumference above the case head sure does look like case head separation waiting to happen.

              Smoothy

I just shot my 2nd reload (3rd firing from new ammo) from the Hornadys and pockets were nice.

Just used the spent case (.45) to datum line method and you're saying that there's probably too much bump? I'm getting .01 bump. The single stage Rock Crusher is set up with the slightest cam over and the issue is the die is set up with too much bump. So easy on this particular problem, back out the die a little?

              4 cases measured

              2 fired
              2 freshly sized

              ALL primers removed

              3.185 on fired
              3.1750 on freshly sized

From what I'm reading, you need only .001 bump.

I did the same with the Nosler brass and it also measured 3.1750. I didn't have a fired case left.

                .
Yes, that is a lot of “bump”!
Generally on bolt action you don’t need to go more than.003” shoulder bump. No wonder those cases show signs of imminent case separation.

Bumping only.001” may not be sufficient enough. Better to be assured easy bolt closing on .003”

Randall once showed a neat trick for measuring die rotation for estimating each.001” by putting 1mm tick marks on tape and wrapping it on the die. In other words the die only needs to rotate out approximately 7mm.

Get fabric tape measure, cut it, wrap it. ha ha
So that probably only works for the the now standard dies. I wonder if that was by design or approximate accident.

7/8-14 tpi has been the "standard" for about 100 years.

1 turn is 1/14 of an inch. Not a design feature, just math. Millimeters around the circumference is just a convenient readily available unit providing an effective resolution for appropriate adjustments for the task.

                          3.185 - 3.175 = .010". Not .001".

I guess the bad news is I am trashing my Nosler brass, but good news is I'm upgrading to Lapua Brass that I found on sale.

The Hornady brass (40pcs) was actually found at the range, once fired.

You came out even, and at least you learned a good lesson on resizing without trashing the Lapua brass. P
