So I made a jig to accurately measure base to datum point for 308. That leaves me feeling good. No huge deal, I understand, but feel good nonetheless. Now I'm working on the other end of the equation datum point to rifling. I believe I am improving on the Hornady model. In any event I seek the most accurate numbers I can get.

What sucks is when you get your max COL but won't fit your AICS mag. My Tikka has a long chamber amd had to start .07 from lands so it could fit the mag. Decent results but I also don't want to single load.

Yes! Even though mag fed and semi auto rounds have additional issues, we all face some similar goals. Part of my journey began when I tried to use rounds someone else had manufactured. My goal chamber is a tight sucker and very sensitive. My test chamber, by the same manufacturer, is looser and far more forgiving. Being able to measure rather than to simply guess is exciting. I wish I were younger so I had more time to enjoy.

I saved a lot of time by not getting into the SAAMI tolerances + or - and then there is stacking. In the beginning there was the Wilson case gage that came with instructions. the Wilson case gage is a datum based tool, it is designed to measure the case from the datum to the case head and from the datum to the end of the neck.

My goal chamber is a tight sucker and very sensitive. My test chamber, by the same manufacturer, is looser and far more forgiving.

I use chamber gages that are made from chamber cut-offs or I use barrels -complete with chamber. When it comes to my 'goal chamber' and my 'test chamber' I use modified dial indicators to measure case head protrusion.

Again: I purchased 4 Mauser rifles that were advertised as 'suspect' with no explanation. The barrels were shot out so I cut the barrel off and used the chambers. There was not .001" difference in the length of the chambers from the datum/shoulder to bolt face; and there was no difference in the case head protrusion. I tested the receivers in an effort to determine what qualified the rifles to be 'suspect'. I made the mistake of including load data, practices and procedures on social media; I found nothing social about the responses with one exception. The smith/reloader called himself 'SEAWEED'.

I took him seriously so I contacted Hodgeon to run the information by them. They said my fire forming load would be the maximum or above load after the cases were formed.

Guffey ... some people give you a hard time. But I like you a lot. If we live so long some day I hope we meet. I applaud your efforts to scrounge. I do the same thing. Saves tons of time to have a throw away item that's useful and saves you the time of making it yourself. Downside is a mess of parts hated by the wife who loves spot clean environment.
