Black Powder ???

I used to get my black powder from Walker 47 in Orange County.
Is there anywhere else that carries it in the area??

Ok - topic drift a bit..... Sportsman's Warehouse carries BP equivalents like Pyrodex and triple-7, not actual BP. I've been using Pyrodex in my BP Damascus shotgun with great results, after running out of my real FF BP.

Is there any real advantage to using only real BP? I ask because I haven't noticed any performance or other use differences, and Pyrodex is available and easy to find.

I tried Pyrodex when it first came out in the 70's, did not like it compared to black powder.

But I'm sure its been improved by now so there should be no problem using it.

IMHO, black powder provides more old time experience on the range in terms of smoke and smells. Otherwise, it is too hard to find in many places in California.

Take this with a grain of salt because, well, I found it on the internet (don't remember where) and I'm not a chemist.

Pyrodex vs. black isn't all that interesting. Apparently pyrodex is pretty much just black powder with added perchlorate to make it technically a smokeless powder. That added perchlorate can apparently cause rapid 'micro etching' of your bore. Is it a big deal? I doubt it; but since it's about as hygroscopic as real black and about as corrosive (albeit with a different mechanism of corrosion) I use black when I can. When I first started Pyrodex was all I could find and it worked well enough to break some clays and make some smoke with my shotgun.

Triple 7 could allow you to possibly maybe blow up your gun, since it's volume for volume more powerful than black.

The others I'm not so familiar with.

At the end of the day black is reliable, been used for centuries, really isn't hard to clean up after, smells nice, looks cool, makes you a better shot, makes you look better, makes you more attractive to every sex, and allows you to say things like "Hey, how do you like the consistency of my ball lube? Works well on mustaches too."

Thanks for the responses, I'm looking for FF black powder for my BPCR cartridges like .577 Snider and .43 Beaumont and .43 mauser. Located in the Corona area, looks like one place out by Palm Springs and another the opposite direction in Newhall. Grafs sells it with a $20 hazmat fee. When you consider the drive time and gas......It may just even out to order it from them.

I have both and I like real black powder better. It gets dirty quicker but is easier to clean and less corrosive. Real black powder smells better and gives you that nice puff of smoke. As far as where to get it I order online. Very hard to find the real stuff in California

Order it from Graf and Sons. Split up an order as group buy to lower per unit has-mat fees. A local ML club may be of help.

Pyrodex will rot your gun despite careful cleaning. The other stuff is hard to ignite. In the end real BP is better in every way that matters.
