    Handtool for decap/de-primer

if I'm using the right term. I'd like to take advantage of some cheap shipping from Cabellas. I'll be buying a tumbler and sifter. I read many threads in here and I recall OCABJ mentioning he removes the primer first before cleaning the brass since that is the significant contributer to lead dust while cleaning.

I would like to follow the same steps, but I do not have my reloader yet. I did some searching last night and all I can come up with is a Berdan hand tool that doesn't seem too great even when shown on videos. Is there a hand tool that's not too expensive to deprime the cases before I toss them into a tumbler? I'd like to get these at once if Cabellas has them (or other stores with Father's day sales).

not sure if there is one, but I would assume it would have to be mounted anyways, so it's not like you could be relaxing on the couch while depriming.
It takes a decent amount of force to deprime most cases even with a mounted press.

In a pinch, you can use the appropriate sized punch and a hammer knock the primers out using this setup. Another option is to just get a Lee Loader setup for the caliber that you want to reload/deprime in and be on your way.

A berdan tool is Not the way to go -- lachmiller and others used to make hand decapping tools like the ones in lee loaders -- Basically a punch and base - There is also the Tong tool decapper but they are rather expensive nowdays -- What cal are you trying to decap? Possibly I have one which I would loan you if you are near me -

Lee Universal decapping die. Goes in a regular 7/8x14 press, uses your standard shell holders:

I've used one for a million years. May even have a spare around here.

Thanks for the tips guys. I'm really just starting to prep some brass - .223, .38 special, 9mm, 45 and 40. But mainly .223 right now because that's the most I have.

gunboat, I'm in Milpitas. Will PM ya.
