How stupid an idea to pull and reuse primers ?

Been out of pistol shooting and Reloading for years.

Going through my stash. No SPP. Turns out I primed almost 400 rounds of 40 brass. I sold my 40 cal guns and doubt I'll ever shoot them.

Hence the question. I'd probably use them in 45ACP SPP brass I have.

Ideas ? It's not really about time, just want to know if it's feasible.

I have removed primers from rifle cases and my body parts are still intact.

Go slow, apply pressure gradually, wear a face shield and gloves.

      IMO, not worth it.

You can damage the little anvil part of the primer. This can cause ignition issues such as weak spark or the dreaded hangfire. I don't consider it a good idea.

But my experience has been similar to JackEllis.

            Wear a faceshield or goggles.
            Push out with steady pressure.
            I use a Lee decapper.
Been gone too long. It's been 15 to 20 years since i had to shelf my guns. Those early years sucked.

Very much so doable, done it countless times without an issue.

I had about 700 308 Win cases crack because the gunpowder deteriorated inside the case.

So, I used my Lee Decapping die, which is vented at the top, and removed every one of those primers from the case. This was not the first time I deprimed live primers, I was given a bucket of WW2 brass with live crimped primers. Some of those were welded to the pocket, and the decapping pin pierced those primers, and the pierced primers went bang!. Which scared the cats and they ran away.

I did not have any primers go off on my 308 Win cases. I reused them all in rock blasting ammunition, and they all went bang.

Considering the cost of primers, I would do it. Wear safety glasses, always wear safety glasses when doing stuff like this.

I have to admit I've done it plenty of times. 400pcs I would definitely make it a careful day of unloading and save some money.

I've done it with everything from SPP to CCI #35, no issues.

Since you don't want the brass anyway, do an even exchange for a reloader that shoots 40 for SPPs.

You save the 40 reloader a bunch of time, you save yourself a bunch of time. The 40 reloader gets free brass in exchange for saving you from potentially damaging primers and causing mis/hangfires and other accidents.

                      Everyone's happy.

Sell the primed brass or trade for primers

                        If someone reloads 40
Trading 500 primer for 300 primer cases is a no brained

I've reused primers like that, but 1 or 2, not 400. Definitely trade them for new primers!

I've done it many times without issue. Right now, it is not a question of whether it is worth your time since primers can not be found at a reasonable price. Honestly, I would do it even if primers were cheap again. Just wear safety glasses and you'll be fine.
