noob question on 45acp bullet

can you use .452 diameter cast bullets for 45acp? why or why not?
according to lyman " shooter should not size cast bullets larger than .451 due to chamber dimensions."
what will happen?

.452 is the normal diameter for 45acp cast bullets -- I have been using .452 diameter cast bullets in both 45acp and 45ar for many moons -- lyman 452374 225gr plainbase round nose and #5 Cramer 205gr semi-wad cutter -- My old NRA book even recommends .453 for use with thin wall nickle cases -simplist way to check out is make up a dummy cart with bullet you want and see how it feeds and chambers -- My weapons are 1911,1911a1, commander and S&W1950 -- newer weapons may differ but I doubt it -- my ha-penny

You use .452" bullets because factory 45 ACP chambers have .453" throats. This way you have a .001" clearance for the bullet to chamber easily, and it is close enough for the bullet to obturate under pressure and seal the system.

If you use .451" bullets, you'll have a .002" clearance and the bullet will not bump-up enough to seal. You'll get blow-by and gas cutting of the bullet shank. The barrel will lead-up alot faster.

i was using jacketed round nose at .451. then i found some cast bullets at half the price but were .452. i was worried i bought 45 colt bullets. thanks alot gunboat and j-cat for your input.
