    reloading 7.62 54r

I want to use powder that i already have
    Win 760
    IMR 4895

Bought some PPU for my Mosin PU sniper and i want to reload non corrosive ammo for it,
Bought some 308 bullets at 165 grains to re load. What i am interested in is how much powder to use as a starting load with 165 grain bullets.
I have seen charts covering this subject but not with these powders.
    THANKS

I use .303 bullets. But would also like to know because I have 2 lbs of win 760. I know 7.62x54R behaves like .308 win on the lower end. But I have never reloaded 54r with 760. I have only used imr 4064

I believe the Mosin barrel takes a .311 or .312 bullet not a .308 which is why a "303" Enfield bullet will work in a Mosin.
The first time i experienced key holes on a paper target with a reload was using 308s in my Mosin.

          Thank you
Seems the Win 760 takes more powder than any other. One CMP posting stated NEVER load more than 50 Grs in 30 06 ?
Stated max load for Win 760 is more than 50 Grs with 165 grain bullets in 30 06.
          Another posting said load 7.62 54r the same a 30 06 ?

I used .308 Hornady match for the Mosin, and the accuracy is horrible. I guess it's due to the smaller bullet in a bigger barrel. Only use .303 or .311 as they're typically listed for sale together. You can use the load for 30-06, but start on the low side and work your way up.

The reason the CMP says that is because they're thinking about the M1 Garand and its op-rod. For bolt-action firearms, the Garand concerns go out the window.

You got some good data in an above post, straight out of the Hornady reloading manual. I suggest using it.

Now, 7.62x54R is not the same cartridge as a .30-06, of course. However, the Mosin action can take a lot of pressure; it's a good, strong action. That means that loads that give you .30-06 pressure levels ought to be OK in a Mosin. Just work up and watch for the signs.

You will run into gas seal problems if you are shooting 0.308" bullets in a 0.312" groove barrel such as most 7.62x54r guns have.

Quickload throws an error about this, but here is what it thinks:

Has anyone pulled the steel core bullets from spam can ammo and seated lead free 7.62x54r for hunting rounds? I'm looking for data.

Use the same powder charge, use the same weight hunting bullet as the ones you pull, and you should be fine.

Cowboy: I would not advise that. Without knowing which lead free bullet is being seated. Not all lead free are created equal. Some drive pressure way the hell up. Like Nosler E-tips.

Compare pics of them with Barnes. Early Barnes had same issue. Then they corrected by cutting multiple grooves in circumference, to lessen bearing surface.

You need to slug your barrel rather than guess on projectile size. I slugged several of my Mosin barrels and they were all over the map. It's a fairly expensive round to reload for so why waste the time and money if your loads will be inaccurate?

                              This is very bad advice.
Same weight only works for same construction and length.
Lead free bullets are notably longer than lead core bullets of the same caliber and weight which means the charges need to be reduced.
