The difference between hoarding and prepared

We've all seen the availability of reloading components rise and fall through the years. So anyone who has any sense buys when its available. Here's my question to everyone....How many primers (or other components) do you keep on hand for these lean times.

I've got a few thousand (enough for 3-4 months of regular shooting) but I haven't been able to find ANY in months so I'm getting pretty nervous.

I was kind of concerned but then realized I have enough loaded to last at least a year, some longer before i need to worry about primers and powder. I have been able to stock up on projectiles and some powder at sane 2019 prices. Issue is the resellers are buying available stock at regular prices and then reselling at the idiotic prices. The market is strained but only because of resellers and innocently, the hoarders.

The market is strained by Supply and demand. The manufactures are having a difficult enough time getting the raw material. And what do you consider hording? I have 3500 rds of 223.....I'm working on another 1000 and 40 lbs of cfe223...is that to much me??

This is California, likely the bluest state in the Union, with a Democratic governor with aims on the White House and a state legislature that puts the capital "P" in Progressive. So, bad enough on a national level level for the next two to four years, but worse locally for the foreseeable future.

Some plan for the four year election cycle. Others, willing and able to commit more to building a reserve, plan on longer. In California, I'd think longer would be prudent. How much longer depends on how bad you think it might get here.

While I'm not a prepper in the complete sense, I thought it good advice I read on another forum that what should be kept in reserve are all the components in the right amounts needed to load of all the ammo required (i.e., don't count on being able to buy or trade for any specific component you're short on).

I feel like I got in just at the right moment and stocked up a little over a year ago, literally just before things started getting weird. I was told that what I was doing wa sa bit ridiculous and excessive. Now they're telling me they wish they would have done what I did at the time. Compared to many here I'm an amateur, but I'm happy I have what I have, which really isn't all that much, but enough to not have to go scavenging and paying the current prices if I did need anything currently.

There is no such thing as hoarding. You are just prepping for a longer period of time.

At least one case of each - SP, LP, SR, LR, and 209. When I crack open the first box of any last case, I start looking for more. If I were still in CA, at least two cases each.

I think this sorta sums it up with respect to components. Some people would use up my supply of finished ammunition and components in a couple of months. I expect to have enough for a few years but I accumulated my "hoard" by looking for and taking advantage of deals. The thinking was, if I have too much I can always sell what's surplus for no less than what I paid, but I expect to use it all up.

It might even be an investment if it doesn't get destroyed. If you buy at the height of the panic it will take longer to recupe but prices don't usually go down.

Although, I just saw a site lower their prices of their complete uppers by $20 and ammo was a plenty today at sportsmans. 30 people in line and 80 percent were for ammo. I left.

Otherwise known as, stock up 12-18 months after a Republican is elected to the White House or when they control one of the branches of Congress.

My theory is simple, buy when supplies are plentiful and cheap.

Sell when supplies are scarce and expensive, so you can buy again when supplies are plentiful.

Same here. I am not going to divulge any quantities of any component, let's just say I am way ahead of the game and will not suffer any shortages at all.
