n00b Stocking up on ammo?

Believe it or not you didn't have the "harshest" post.

I want 77gr. to make sure the bad guys don't get back up. I had read that with the faster twist rate of 1:7, lighter loads could possibly have the jacket and core separate.

Since I have been told I have longer than I thought to stock up I'd rather get the right stuff and since the rifle isn't finished yet I'm willing to backorder ammo.

77 gr or 80 gr Sierra Match Kings (or the heavy VLDs) are mainly for target/match shooting. They are heavy to improve long range (read 600 yds or more) performance. They are expensive. If you find ammo loaded for them, it will also be expensive match ammo. I also wouldn't select an AR as my "bad guy defence" gun unless it was the only one I had. I'd pick the .45 if I was proficient; if not, I'd look to buy a Remington 870 or similar pump shotgun. No one will get up from that, and it probably won't penetrate all your walls and your neighbors', too.

Why did you select a 14.5" barrel? You just have to hang another 2" of useless steel on the end, why not make that an additional 2" of useful barrel? Just curious, but I've never understood the fixation on short barrels that aren't really short.....

I must admit, I did buy some ammo in preparation for hard times. It's all hunting ammo so I could feed myself when money was scarce.

However, this hoarding thousands of rounds of ammo seems silly. It's gotten to the point where your average joe can't practice with the gun that they bought. I'm a newbie when it comes to guns. It's a re-discovered hobby for me. However, I refuse to be that dumbass that can't hit a target at 15 feet. (I met that dumbass at the range. I'm still flabbergasted at the grass flying everywhere.)

Buy what you need for practice. Buy what you need for self-defense or hunting. Wait for prices to go down after this scare-mongering fear has gone away.

I haven't bought anything yet. I thought ab 2062 could go into place on the 1st? If I have more time that's good. In which case which brands should I buy? I'd rather pay a little more for something cleaner

Cleaner than what ?? In the only operable weapon you have, the .45 , what do you normally shoot that makes you think it's dirty ? What are you comparing it to ? Are your groups good with the dirty ammo you are using now or have you shot it at all ? Your above post states you haven't bought anything yet so that leads me to believe you have never shot the .45 yet, or do not even have it to begin with, OR you are looking to find the most popular ammo to buy to just resell later for a profit. What's up with you ?

Get whatever .45 you can if your stocking up. Or any caliber for that matter for the guns you plan to own. I've never had any failures from wolf or bear myself. What brand of .45 ammo do you currently use that is dirty. I have shot most brands of factory ammo through my 1911 and have hand loaded quite a few different "recipies" , different powder and such, But I always find find myself cleaning it after the session. Try different types, see what your gun likes. Hopefully you will find some that does not leave your weapon in an in an uncleanly state of being and have great accuracy.

Buy 50-100 rounds of each brand that you'd like to try out in your gun and then shoot them to see which one your gun likes the best. For the most part, if it goes *bang* and hits your target reliably about where you aimed then it's decent ammo. If you're wanting to same hole everything then that's just competition shooting, not real life scenario self-defense shooting.

i have cans of reloads for my 40 & 9 (i need to buy some more 45s)...i have a few HP for 40 & 45 (need to buy more)...i settled on pmc & xm 193 & m855 (need to go out to blm to shoot this) for my AR...

buy a box or two of which ever ammo/grain and try it out see what u like/feels better then go from there...
