    Help identify 45 70 load

I posted this question on another room here on CG but figured I should ask it here. I have come into a large supply of reloaded 45 70 ammo, with 405 lead bullets. I plan to pull bullets and reload them, but I'm curious about what they were shot in due to fact the powder charge is 28.0 grs of a dark short extruded powder. Seems like small charge for this round. Got ammo from grandson of deceased shooter with no info other than he thought it was for lever gun. Which is what I have. So anyone here familiar with this low of charge?

That powder charge would be about right IF the powder is Accurate 5744.

      Maybe H4198 for Trapdoor Rifles.

If you got a bunch you could send a few out for testing.

Does sound like a mild "Trapdoor" round.

I just checked, and H4198 is a bit green though. I think IMR 4198 is black.

Flight762, I do believe you've nailed it with the 5744, all my research points to that load bullet combo. Thanx for help, I now have a good feel for it, still gonna reload em, but knowledge is king

I'm running the lee 405gr and use 30gr of 3031. Does the powder look like cut in half varget logs?

                Two choices

                Shoot
                One

Pull projectiles and reload with a known powder
Rule 1- ALL GUNS ARE ALWAYS LOADED

Rule 2 -NEVER LET THE MUZZLE COVER ANYTHING YOU ARE NOT PREPARED TO DESTROY (including your hands and legs)

Rule 3 -KEEP YOUR FINGER OFF THE TRIGGER UNTIL YOUR SIGHTS ARE ON THE TARGET

Rule 4 -BE SURE OF YOUR TARGET AND WHAT IS BEYOND IT

Like I said in your other thread....you will never know what that powder is.

I'm loading IMR 4198 in the 28-31 grain load under a 405 grain cast lead bullet
