    Ammo Background check question

Not sure if this is the right section to post but just looking for insight.

I haven't bought ammo since the pandemic started because prices were outrageous but recently i had to pick up some just to get out and shoot a little (boredom).

Anyways, prior to the pandemic, when i went to buy ammo at a store, they did an "eligibility check" which cost $1 everytime i purchased ammo. This last visit (to a different store), they charged me $19 to buy my ammo. I didn't notice it until i got home and looked at the receipt but I thought it was supposed to be just an "eligibility check" first and as long as your properly registered in the system, you could buy ammo with that $1 fee but why the hell did this shop charge me the full $19?

Also, what exactly does this "background check" entail? I assumed it was just a check that says ok "you have a firearm registered to your name, you can buy the ammo". Lastly, Does the shop also report how much ammo you bought to the DOJ (or wherever they report the background check)?

First; the store you went to charged you the $19 because you did not say anything. Even pre-covid and I found myself buying in a store, I would tell them to charge me a $1.00. Even then some places questioned this, I explained I have a COE.

Secondly; the check is to verify you are not a prohibited person. I do not recall if the finally bill and entry screen asks for the amount of ammo purchased.

If you took your ammo right then and there, it should be $1, not $19.

The dealer does enter the amount and caliber into the ammo “DROS”.

You got GOT. LGS be working the register like 3 card monte. I have to admit I didn't' look at my last purchase either. Just checked, they didn't charge me extra. I remember they asked when I last bought ammo, gun and if my address was correct.

Given that the verification for the $19 check can take up to (or over) a week, I doubt that (a "basic", $19 check) was what you got if you left with ammo.

I doubt you'll be able to get any money back (though it also wouldn't hurt to try), but informing the shop of the situation may save others from the cost of the same mistake.
