12 GA Reloading Skivvy ?

So with the shortage of everything the only thing I was able to find for primers was 3 1/2 inch Rio Primed Hulls. I am cutting them down to 2 3/4 and maybe 3 inches. I cant shoot 3 1/2.

Do I need to skivvy the hulls once I cut them down ? Will not skivvying them affect how long the hulls last etc.

if so any suggestions on how to skivvy them ? will I need to buy the tool from Ballistic Products ?

are they skived hulls already? You can either buy a trimmer or make your own with some pipe.

They were skivvied but once I cut them down I figure i lose that.. since they are only skivied at the end

I made my own trimmer with a pipe.. so I am good there.. the question is if i don skivvy them what is the result, hull wear etc

Hulls don't need to be skived but it makes crimping easier, which is helpful with brand new hulls. I can't say about hull life, but if you leave them alone there's more plastic to char haaha. That can be both good and bad I guess. It also helps with wad insertion. Similar to expanding metallic cases for bullet seating. Try some plain and some skived and see what the crimps are like and then what the petals look like after firing.

If you're looking for the skiving tool, I was at Reload OC today and saw he has the BP skiving tool on the shelf.

in my opinion skiving is not needed. it makes the crimp look better, but I think its purely cosmetic. The rio hulls will only reload three, maybe four times anyways so it's a lot of work for a hull that doesn't last too long.
