+1 Re-set your decapping and resizing die. Read instructions carefully. If it isn't that one, then it's another. One die is way too low.

Also, you have to ALWAYS decrimp .223 brass unless you're re-loaded them a couple times. I swear, as well as you decrimp the brass, some primers are tighter than a . . . . well, . . . . you know.

I use the Lyman case prepper and it works great, but still, sometimes Primers will just not go in. If the primer is too tight, just toss the brass b/c .223 brass is dirt cheap. Just toss it and move on. It isn't worth the primer.

did you measure the brass length ?

try this, put a piece of brass in the bullet seating die and run it thru its stroke.
WITHOUT the bullet. see if the brass compresses like the others did.
it it does. then you need to adjust the die.
if it does not. then it could be the neck of the brass was not sized correctly.

I run all my 223 brass through a primer swaging every time. Just part of the prep. Now worth sorting out to me.

Damn, that’s like $2 in primers down the drain....

Do you have a case gauge? Drop the case inside and see if it’s full length sized and trimmed to the correct length.

If it is, remove the seating stem from your seating die and with the case in place, run the ram up. Now, run your seating die all the way down until contact drop the ram and do another half turn.

Now put your seating stem back in and slowly run it down a turn at a time while measuring the overall length until you get to the OAL you need.

Good thing you checked your finished stuff before going another 100. Someone did that a bit ago and it was like, damn, you gotta QC every 10 or so at least.

It's probably the seater die, back the top all the way out and start over. What's your setup? Rig, dies, process?

What brand/type of die set?

Did you resize the brass?

Did you follow instructions when setting up the seating die?

Chamfer the primer pockets and re-adjust the seater die.

Also check the case mouth. Make sure the brass was deburred. After trimming there is a burr in the inside of the case mouth that needs to be removed.

My guess is if you ran a new round of Ammo through your press, you would have the same result.


In setting up seating die, you can set a known good round or dummy round into the press.

Then install the seating die slowly down onto the known new round or dummy round.

It can get you really close when first setting up the die
