Question about neck sizing tension...

Hey all, it's been a while since I have been on CG but the plus side of that is that I am now a South Dakota resident and have tax stamps for two suppressors and two SBR's in the works

Anyways, finally got around to setting up my reloading room again and I have two questions. First, can you help me figure out the difference between these two dies I have? They were all in the same box so I am not sure which is which.

Redding 6.5 Creedmoor B/NK 6U

Second, I previously have been running an LR308 platform in 6.5 Creedmoor and was running 4-5 thousandths of neck tension as when I did less I had setback issues or if I chambered a round, didn't shoot, then extract the bullet would get stuck in the rifling... I just bought a Savage 110 Ultralite in 6.5 Creedmoor as well for hunting and shenanigans out in the Dakota's. The question is, should I reload bullets with the high neck tension so that I can potentially use the rounds in both, or go back to the standard 2 thousandths neck tension and have a separate set of standards for both guns in addition to not being limited by the AR magazine COAL?

Personally, I would keep two separate lots of brass, one for each rifle. The chambers will more than likely be different enough that sizing and shooting will overwork the brass switching between the chambers.

To get the most out of each rifle, you will want to adjust seating depths, powder charges, neck tension, shoulder setback? (headspace for everyone not named Guffey), etc. Again, all the more reason to keep them separate. Not to say you couldn't shoot ammo for one in the other in a pinch though. If for no other reason, I would full length size every time. Adjust & use the same die (Redding type S full length for instance) with different bushings for the different rifles.

As far as the separate brass, I tend to agree with you but was feeling maybe a bit lazy. In my autoloader I actually have been running Lake City match brass which I converted myself (I was injured, not working, and bored) that I will keep for the AR platform. I have about 800-900 pieces of new Hornady brass that I will keep for the bolt gun. I plan on using a Whidden Gunworks bushing / FL sizer, and the neck only's were for when I was unhappy with the neck tension and was able to pull, size, and reseat the bullets without as much fuss.

And how do I like the Ultralite? I haven't shot it but the bolt is smooth, it is as light as can be, and I think it will be a good addition to the stable. Just waiting on opticsplanet to ship my glass. Decided not to go stupid on expensive heavy glass like my Kahles 6-24x56 or Nightforce ATACR... went with a sensible SigOptics Tango 4 4-16x44 Mil-rad with the DEV reticle. Hopefully I can get some loads started and it zero'd.

What should I start with? I have a ton 120g spire points and an equal amount of Hornady 95g AMAX... its gonna be my coyote / prairie dog gun until deer season rolls around.

Can report back once I shoot it, but I liked how it felt comfort,weight, and balance wise compared to the Tikka t3x, Christensen Arms Mesa barrel was too skinny IMO to run a supressor, and Ruger American which is a good gun heavy and in a different playing field.

I wouldn't be necksizing (only) for the auto.

Can if you want for the bolt action with dedicated brass.

That's what I do with .223. FL sized can go in either and Neck only for the bolt gun.

Bigdawg86 is pulling bullets when he ejects the case. If that problem could be fixed with neck tension it seems to me there would be a member of this forum could help him solve his problem.

Neck tension is cute, I prefer bullet hold, I want all the bullet hold I can get; when seating bullets I want about 45 pounds of effort when seating.

Bullets being pulled when unfired round is ejected: I am the fan of the running start, I want my bullets to have that 'that jump. that means I do not seat my bullets into the lands, but if I did bullet hold will prevent the bullet from being pulled.

I'm guessing the first is a Neck only die (bushing; probably no shoulder adjustment); the second is a full length bushing die (i.e. a "normal" sizing die with a bushing rather than a machined neck portion.)
