Range brass vs. Sorted by head stamp? Does it make a difference?

Normally I sort my 9mm brass by head stamp. But I had a hundred or so mixed range trash.

I'm talking cbc, s&b, lax, perfecta, fiocchi, blazer, and a bunch of other crap I never heard of. I loaded up a hundred rounds and you know what?

They all went bang, they all fed fine, they all punched holes in the target.

    Thoughts ?

I notice with mixed brass the seating and the crimp feel inconsistent, and in fact are with some crimps tighter due to longer cases. But as far as fps, accuracy, etc I see no difference with target loads.

I load more precision for the PC9 and at 100 yards it does make a difference, tighter groups by sorting brass but really only a 1/4" bigger group with mixed brass.

      Just shoot!

Yeah, I don't like the maxtech or perfecta cases so much but never had one stuck yet.

they will stick in 45 acp they get a nice bulge.

I do not use the lee factory crimp it sizes down the cast bullets I shoot from .452 to .448 and then they lead and maybe even tumble

Yes it'll all go bang. It really depends on how well you want them to go bang. If you sort by headstamp then you should get single digit sd. Mixed will get you into the double digits. Up you if that matters.

My match ammo is sorted. Blaster ammo is mixed

I have not done any testing of my own but there was an article in one of the hunting mags a few years ago where someone tested the single headstamp hypothesis. In HIS test, mixed brass slightly outperformed whatever single headstamp brass he was using.

Here's one of likely many threads where shooters debate this question for rifle cases:

Before today I had always separated all rifle brass prior to reloading it. I took 13 different headstamps and loaded 20 rounds each, using the same load in each and fired 1 of each without looking at the headstamp. All 13 rounds from the 1st group formed a group of less than 1". I still have...

My mixed brass reloads shoot similar to premium SD ammo, as far as consistency goes. Blows out cheap factory fmj easily. I won't sort pistol brass, not worth it.

I sort LC rifle brass, but that's different.

straight wall pistol, not a bid deal. Necked rifle and .357 sig, it makes a difference.

I don't sort handgun brass. Whatever the loss in accuracy is, I'm not worried about the reduction. I mostly practice trigger control and hand grip with my range ammo. I only shoot to 25 yards at the indoor range anyway. Its not long distance.

I did notice a few 9mm cases had scorch marks (carbon) on one side from my last range trip. I need to load hotter for the PC Carbine, but not sure if it was the 115FMJ, or Acme 124gr PC. Need to test, and no better reason than to go to the range more. A cheap $30 red dot puts them all in the same area, and I don't shoot for supreme accuracy, just yet... and some of my 9mm brass was hand me down from a life-long shooter, so no telling how many times it has been reloaded.

I have had VERY FEW case failures/splits with all I have reloaded, and have reloaded some at least maybe 10 times, myself...

9mm? You're wasting your time sorting. I've loaded and shot about 35-40k 9mm rounds in the past 2 years. Sorted vs mixed doesn't make a **** of difference.

I can’t tell much difference as far as MY shooting goes, but as far as loading goes-CBC has thicker case walls, and S&B (as well as NATO stuff) has tight primer pockets, in my experience.
Some of the flash holes are off center, PMC is an offender, lately Winchester is shif too...

Maybe something would show up in a ransom rest, but I have not seen it with pistol cases. Mixed pistol cases shoot outstandingly. Been doing that for decades.
