SKS ammo type

Hi all. I am going out shooting with my dad. He has an SKS (not sure on the brand or origin—Russian?). I planned on picking up some ammo to shoot with so I don’t burn through his own supply. Last time we went out, I noticed he was using Wolf and Tula steel case. I know it’s not recommended using steel with AR’s, but I read that it’s good to go with SKS and AK type rifles.

Am I good to get steel? Or should I get brass? Any thoughts?

No SKS of mine ever complained about chewing through steel case ammo. Unless your pops has a super rare variant (i.e. East German or North Korean), then feed the beast with steel to your heart's content.

Also, the whole "steel is bad for ARs" stance has kinda lightened up. General consensus out there is that steel case ammo is not as evil as most think. Here's a quick Youtube video discussing the matter:

Hopefully, you can find what y’all need.
Just give it a good cleaning that night, and patch the bore a few days later.

Steel is fine. Just check if older surplus that it's not corrosive. If it is, no worries, just clean accordingly. You are a good son for supplying your own ammo....Be safe and Have fun with your Dad!

SKS is an instrument of war, it doesn't need to be coddled.

wow... people are getting soft these days. Back when I was but a wee cal gunner, it was a 1000 smacks with a wet trout. now that hurt and left a mark....and smell. people knew for days you messed up.

Get cheap steal case unless the range prohibits it.
