Help with a broken die.

Hey guys, I just broke my first die. The decapping pin snapped off one of my RCBS .30-06 dies. Can I fix this or do I need to replace the die? If I can fix it, how so and what parts do I need? Thanks in advance, I always get good scoop on calguns.

Seriously, though, do you know what caused the bent decapper? Was it loose or did you do the above?

You can buy extra pins and replaced it. If you are in the L.A. area go to the Angeles Range/ Reloading store and should have what you need. As far as part number look at the documetation that came with your die, they normally have a picture and the numbers.

Thanks for the link. How would one go about changing these out? Or, are the instructions in the box? I only worked about 800 rounds of brass before this snapped. Is this common?

Not really sure what caused it. I was decapping some old Korean made .30-06 brass. Never even made a dent in the primer. Just snapped like a twig. This was the first Korean case I tried.

Sounds like a good deal. How do you change this thing? I am sure I could rip it apart and figure it out but are there any tricks I need to know?

Just unscrew it,you didn't break the die. Replace the pin and screw it back together. The pin only has to be about 1/8" past the end of the dies base to pop the primer out.Others please correct me if I am wrong on the 1/8". Make sure your brass is boxer primed,always check for that when depriming brass unknown to you for the first time.

Perhaps that Korean was Berdan primed. Can you look into the case? If so, do you see one centered hole or two smaller holes? If two, it is Berdan and you can't deprime it with the standard die. I believe there is a special tool used to deprime Berdan cases, and then you have to find Berdan primers. Probably not worth it for something as common as .30-06....

Also, make sure the decapping rod isn't bent.
RCBS will probably send replacements at no charge but, they are kinda slow if you go that route.
Always, a good idea to have extra decapping pins on hand.

Make sure the decapping stem is tight in the body, the nut and screw at the top need to be tightened down. Sometimes it manages to wiggle loose after a few resizes, just check every so often.

As a side note RCBS customer service is fantastic, quick polite responses. I had a similar issue and they shipped me a pack of 5 and a new decapping rod w/o any charges. It arrived in less than a week. I just wonder why they decide to use easily snapped decapping pins instead of the solid one piece design from Lee.

That's nothing unusual the decapping pins break ,it's a simple proceedure to replace a pin ,just replace the pin and keep on reloading it pays to keep extras on hand.I alway use an L.E. Wilson military primer punch
