I just got off the phone with a Barnes tech regarding minimum opening velocities for some of their bullets in .458 diameter.
Here is what I learned:
300gr TTSX SOCOM: 1100fps (the 300gr. TAC-TX SOCOM is the exact same bullet, different part number for LE he said)

250gr TSX: 1150fps
300gr TSX: 1150fps

Hodgdon load data for 45-70 using H4198 under that 300gr SOCOM bullets can get me 2400fps at the muzzle pretty easy. That turns my 1885 into a 400 yard deer gun, or a 250 yard elk gun.
Perhaps someone else will find this info useful....I never knew any of those Barnes bullets would open at that low of velocity....
