    Old Reloading Powder

I have gotten back in to reloading after a long absence. I only shoot rifle now and have not shot pistol in ages.

I find I have 5 pounds of unopened and 1 pound opened cans of pistol powder. See photo. They were all stored properly. I have two pounds of each brand and opened one of each to inspect. They all smell fine and look fine when I poured out on to a piece of paper. No dust and no orange residue.

I have been told this powder is fine to reload and fire, but I am never going to use it. Is this powder too old to sell to someone?

There should be a date & batch stamp on the bottles. Include that & let the potential buyers decide.

But there are lots of powders that have been stored in far worse conditions than your garage, and for decades longer, that people have no problems using. Admittedly most of them are in tiny brass containers, but the same idea applies.

I used to shoot Bullseye powder from an #8 pound cardboard container. It was probably from the 1950's.

There was #4 left when it was given to me.

It shot just fine. I bet someone here would enjoy buying your old powder.

Powder lasts a long time when properly stored.

If it looks, and smells fine. Then it is fine.

I'll take it all..... If you're close to Idaho.

If you were.down in so cal. I would give you $10 per pound.
I take a chance on stuff like that.
Been gone too long. It's been 15 to 20 years since i had to shelf my guns. Those early years sucked.

I picked 8 lbs. of Red Dot from an estate sale that had 1974 written on the container. Used up the last of it 2 years ago. It shot just fine.

Thanks so much everyone. I would not want to sell anything that would create issues for a buyer.

Are primers just as stable over time. I have a lot of large pistol primers too. Everything has been stored in an office cabinet with a stable room temperature around 70˚F.

If it's not stinky or oxidized it's good to go. Just reloaded a bunch of 223 with a 40 year old can of IMR.

Thanks. I have been able to pick up rifle reloading powder over the last two weeks, but primers seem to be nonexistent. I do have enough old stock rifle primers to carry me for a least a year of shooting.
