First time reloader with a mini 30 needs advice

So I finally took the leap and decided to get into reloading after wanting to for a while. I've done a good amount of reading after checking out a few books at my local library I couldn't find answers to a few of my nagging questions.

My mini 30 is a 1989 model and have read that the barrels were .308 as opposed to .310~.311 as they are now. Is there any truth to this? Would this mean that I could use the .308 projectiles?

Secondly, I ordered the Lee challenger reloading kit along with Lee Pacesetter dies in 7.62 x 39, would these dies be able to accomidate the .308 projectile if the answer to the above question is yes?

Lastly, I've noticed that the 7.62 x 39 round is able to use many different types of primers. What are some of the most economical primers that you guys are using?

    Thanks for helping me out!

Literally, whatever you can find. If you have not been attentive to the primer situation you are in for a rude awakening. They are scarce and/or people are charging astronomical prices for them. Your location would be helpful in case others in your area have a line on them.

Where are you located? If you are interested in getting some hands on reloading experience and you are close enough to me, PM me and I'll make the time to show you how I reload. I've done this with a few other CGers lately and they all seem to have got a lot out of it. I'd suggest slugging your bore to find out the actual size of your bore. Or, experiment with .309 projos first. If they shoot well, use them. If they keyhole, go with .310-.311 projos.

OK, you're in SD. So, if you ever get up to the Thousand Oaks area, PM me and I'll give you a lesson.

The nominal bullet diameter for 7.62X39mm is .311". If yo use regular .308" bullet, You won't get much accuracy. It seems that the Soviet block bullets in any given caliber is a few thousands of an inch larger in diameter than the US calibers.

It's tough right now for new reloaders. I just got into reloading and I'm having a really tough time finding everything I need. I finally got enough to start reloading .223. I now have .45ACP and 30-06 dies on the way. I cant find 230gr jacketed .45 bullets anywhere so I had to just order lead. Best thing you can do is go to all your local stores and get whatever you can and browse online. I'm gonna start saving for the Miwall sale and see if I can get primers.

Thanks for the offer Cannoneer, I would definately take you up on that if I was in the area. I just finished slugging the barrel and it came out to be .310, looks like I'll skip the .308 and go right to that.

True, however early Minis did use .308" barrels.

Don't give up yet. You can try .308" projectiles of which there are much more to choose from than .311". If they work out, you're fine. Try Hornady 110gr V-Max or Nosler 125gr Ballistic Tips...

One final question and I should be all set. I've been reading a lot about primers and read that the cci #34 primers are intended for the 7.62 x39 round and is intended to prevent slam fires. Is this something I would have to worry about with the mini30, or can I just go ahead and wait for the cheaper cci #200's ? Thanks
